July 8, 2006: More on MMEV & Oerlikon, etc.

Army wants to keep Leopards, ditch MGS and MMEV
http://toyoufromfailinghands.blogspot.com/

I really do not know how to assess this. But [....]

The army's plan would instead see the MGS working in conjunction with another high-tech weapon, the Multi-Mission Effects Vehicle or MMEV. Based on the army's existing air defence missile system called ADATS, the MMEV would be designed and built by the Quebec-based aerospace firm Oerlikon and be capable of shooting down aircraft or destroying ground targets.

But less than three years later, and in a major reversal of its plans, the army is now asking the Conservative government to cancel both the MGS and MMEV programs.

The MGS is no longer the right vehicle for the army and the Leopard is no longer seen as a millstone. A study is under way to determine how to keep the tank in service until at least 2015. [Maybe there was a bit of politicization under the previous (Liberal) governments? Rumours abounded but ....... Nope, can't be ... must have been something else.]

July 8, 2006: $650M into spy gear upgrades

Ottawa to put $650M into spy gear upgrades -- Canadian high-tech firms won't be allowed to bid David Pugliese, CanWest, July 05, 2006
www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=5a6675ed-4769-499c-a716-f645bbf4b4f9

That is probably a wise decision, considering what has been going on for years ...

OTTAWA - The Canadian government is spending more than $650-million to improve its links with the top U.S. spy agency and to upgrade communications systems and codes over the next decade.

The program was started after a decision by the U.S. National Security Agency, the American government's electronic eavesdropping organization, to replace all its cryptographic equipment over a 12-year period. To continue operating with the United States and allies who use such American gear, Canada must adopt a similar upgrade program.

The upgrade will allow the continued exchange of sensitive information between allies and will better protect such data from prying eyes. The Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence operate about 80% of the equipment to be modernized, but other federal agencies are also upgrading their gear.

[....] The upgrades ... co-ordinated by the government's electronic spy agency, the Communications Security Establishment.

[....] Canada has an ageing inventory ... Defence Department ... other federal agencies.

Some critics, however, have questioned why Canadian companies have been excluded from the process, noting the country's high-technology firms are capable of building such equipment and have the necessary security clearances for such a project. [My question would be how much they have been compromised by what has gone before ... or is one not supposed to ask? How much technology and communications information has already been bought or stolen?]

Al-Qaeda 'bid to infiltrate MI5'

Al-Qaeda sympathisers have been trying to infiltrate the British security service MI5, the BBC has learned.

Whitehall officials confirmed what some had long suspected, says BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner.

But those with al-Qaeda sympathies were weeded out during a six to eight-month vetting process, officials added. [.... Why do I believe they may have missed a few? ]

MI5 believes, from polls, that around 400,000 people in the UK are "sympathetic to violent jihad around the world", said Frank Gardner.

Within that number 1,200 people have been identified as being activists the security service believe are engaged in acts of terrorism at home and abroad
, he said.

The Plot To Hijack Your Computer -- They watch you surf the Web. They plague you with pop-up ads. Then they cripple your hard drive via newsbeat1
www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_29/b3993001.htm

Consumers have strong opinions about Direct Revenue's software. "If I ever meet anyone from your company, I will kill you," a person who identified himself as James Chang said in an e-mail to Direct Revenue last summer. "I will f------ kill you and your families." Such sentiments aren't unusual. "You people are EVIL personified," Kevin Horton wrote around the same time. "I would like the four hours of my life back I have wasted trying to get your stupid uninvited software off my now crippled system."

[....] According to angry consumers and the New York State Attorney General, Direct Revenue makes "spyware." These programs track where you go on the Internet and clutter your screen with annoying pop-up advertisements for everything from pornography to wireless phone plans. Spyware can get stuck in your computer's hard drive as you shop, chat, or download a song. It might arrive attached to that clever video you just nabbed at no charge. Web security company McAfee Inc. (MFE ) estimates that nearly three-quarters of all sites listed in response to Internet searches for popular phrases like "free screen savers" or "digital music" attempt to install some form of advertising software in visitors' computers. Once lodged there, spyware can sap a PC's processing power, slow its functioning, and even cause it to crash.

This explains the vitriol aimed at Direct Revenue. [....]

Who am I?

I am a professional Canadian artist of more than 42 years. My ancestry is Irish and Anishinabe Ojibway. I believe in the Constitution Act of 1867 and I love my country.
Updated July 1, 2006
takingcanadaback.ca?

TakingCanadaBack.ca has one objective, to return Canada to the kind of country envisioned by our Founding Fathers. It seems difficult for most Canadians to understand clearly what is happening in North America today because they have been taught all their lives that the world works in a much different way than it actually does. Let's look at some recent examples in Canada.

There have been two decisions made by two Canadian prime ministers that are particularly troubling and go against the spirit of the Constitution Act of 1867. If either of these men had honored their oath when taking office they would not have done what they did. These two decisions have been the cause of most of the problems we are facing today - street gangs, crime, terrorism, loss of individual freedoms, immigration of criminals and terrorists, rampant socialism, out of control multiculturalism, loss of sovereignty. I could go on... [....]

Times are not good in Canada anymore. Crime is rampant on our streets; we are no longer safe in our homes; membership in street gangs is increasing; more criminals are being allowed into Canada daily, as if we didn't have enough of our own; corruption has been brought into the very halls of government; our freedoms are being curtailed; our country is losing her sovereignty; and a large part of our population have been bought off by promises of easy social payments and the false safety of the nanny state. It gets worse. [....]

These puppet masters are headed up by a small group of inbred, ultra-secretive, fabulously wealthy families around the world, less than two hundred it has been said. They are part of the top 13 Illuminati bloodlines. When you hear and read about the New World Order you should think of these people. Their objective is a one world government and borderless countries where no individual freedoms exist.

These people use blackmail and bribery to control key politicians and beaurocrats and through them our governments. They use fear and propaganda dispersed through the media to control the people. [....]

Below this elite group are several layers of rich, powerful people who are the first lines of facilitators. They also have wealth and power but wield it in a much more open manner. They exert enormous, almost total influence on world affairs. They are the generals of the New World Order. They attend private, secret meetings with the top elite.

One of these individuals is Canadian. [....]

The continued occupation of a disputed tract of land in Caledonia by aboriginal protesters in the face of an earlier finding that they are in contempt of court means that rule of law has still not been restored in the community, says the judge who issued the order.

And in a democracy, when court orders are not obeyed, “the court is not hurt by it. It is destroyed by it. There will be a return to rule of law,” Mr. Justice T. David Marshall of the Ontario Superior Court said at a hearing yesterday as he ordered parties to return to court on July 24. [....]

July 8, 2006: Warning: Bust!

Bust could be worst since end of Second World War -- Economists warn of onslaught of Chinese production John Greenwood, Financial Post, Published: Friday, July 07, 2006

story.html?id=a45847b2-c908-4381-ac84-5e3c7b803530

The Canadian steel industry is facing a bust cycle potentially more devastating than anything seen since the end of the Second World War because of an expected onslaught of Chinese steel, industry watchers warn.

[....] Steel is already landing in North America at prices "significantly" below the cost of raw materials needed to make it, said Jayson Myers, chief economist of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association. "There's so much Chinese capacity coming on stream and that's already a problem for the whole of North America."

The crux of the problem is that even though China makes more steel than it needs, it's still building new foundries.
Mr. Hall said Chinese capacity has grown by about 22% annually for the past five years, for a doubling of output in just five years. "Those are staggering numbers," he said. "And this year isn't any different -- they're on track to grow another 22%."

Analysts worry that much of China's excess steel can now be channeled into manufactured products that can find their way around Canadian anti-dumping duties and onto the market, potentially causing serious damage to the Canadian economy.

Check further into Xstrata, Falconbridge, INCO, Arcelor, etc. ... and more on the push by the Chinese to gather up the world's metals, to corner the market on scrap metals (and more that I have forgotten). Note also, the increased theft of copper ... a Nova Scotia story lately ... but it is happening everywhere. Now, who would be doing that? Who would be stealing and selling it and to whom? To where?

Are you a scofflaw? You may be, and not even know it. Canada's Criminal Code contains all sorts of obsolete laws that authorities haven't enforced for decades. This week and next, Toronto-based blogger and legal expert Bob Tarantino is introducing readers to come of these dusty prohibitions. In today's third instalment, he traces the evolution of Canada's ban on treason, sedition and other 'crimes against the state.'

Who dares call it treason? Better yet, what do they dare call treason?
The issue recurs throughout Canadian history, and is addressed in accordance with the concerns of the day. Threats to the person of the monarch were considered treason in the 19th century; labour strife fit the bill between the World Wars; communist infiltration was the rage during the Cold War; now there are post-9/11 jihadist threats, such as the alleged conspiracy by 17 Toronto-area Muslims to blow up city landmarks.

Few sections of the Criminal Code offer as clear a glimpse of our past as do the provisions relating to treason, sedition and other "crimes against the state." [....]

[....] They were especially concerned about cartel enforcement. The bureau issued a total of 2-million in fines to alleged cartels, a low number compared with other agencies, the survey said.

"[Cartel] cases take 42 months to complete, which is exceptionally long and users confirm that many cases are limping forward without any resolution.

[....] The average abuse of dominance case took two years to close. Stakeholders argued that's too long, "Particularly if the agency doesn't get a 'result.' "

Perhaps the most serious concerns were with the bureau's staff. Respondents said they were worried it has lost "a great number of senior people over recent years" that were replaced with "younger and less-knowledgeable staff." [....]

So re-hire those with the knowledge ... Canada needs to end putting out to pasture people who still want to work and who have a lifetime of background, experience and know how.

Canada on satellite radio radar P.J. Harston, Business Editor, The London Free Press, September 9, 2005
www.fyilondon.com/cgi-bin/publish.cgi?x=articles&s=shopping&p=104298

Satellite radio, which has been around for more than two years in the U.S., consists of about 120 stations from two companies -- Sirius and XM -- that are beamed directly into car or home devices, many of which plug directly into existing sound systems.

[....] The "radio" is really a receiver with a miniature display screen upon which information, such as the song title and the artist's name, is displayed.

When Canadian satellite radio starts up, about 100 channels will be available from each of two companies that will broadcast to about 90 per cent of Canada's land mass: Sirius Canada and Canadian Satellite Radio Inc. (partly owned by XM). CHUM Inc. is offering a 50-channel land-based digital radio product that will be for urban markets only.

While licences have been issued to all three companies by the CRTC, subscriptions have yet to be sold and the federal government is already mulling whether to review the licences.

Why does a broadcaster need a licence controlled by someone else in a world of the ability to podcast your own program? Am I missing something big? Is it the grasp of those who would control us? ... Or my own inadequate knowledge?

July 8, 2006: Nortel: Is something big on the way?

Lately I have heard of people laid off from Nortel who were given very good lay-off packages, but who had to sign an agreement not to go to work for anyone else for three months -- good reliable workers, by the way, not ones any company would fire. The scuttlebutt is that there is something big in the offing. Would that be more China contracts? See today's Globe and Mail for an article on the Bombardier train operating with essential Nortel communications from China (Is it from Xian? Beijing? i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done

i fear

With Wreath-Laying, Silence -- "The U.K. will observe two minutes of silence at noon to remember the victims of suicide bombings that killed 52 people and injured more than 700 in London a year ago." July 7 (Bloomberg)

Meanwhile, via Al Jazeera, the peaceful ones offered their usual peace initiatives ...

[....] One of the bombers, Shehzad Tanweer, was shown on a videotape broadcast by al-Jazeera yesterday threatening further attacks until the U.K. pulls its troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq. Sick, sick, sick -- I just heard that reporters went to mosques in Leeds, home of three of the terrorists. One mosque had a sermon but the imam did not mention the bombing. Reporters went to other mosques and they had locked their doors ... no response ... only silence ... which speaks volumes. Listen to the silence.

What is the meaning of "Progressive"? Since it is so often used, so seldom defined, how does it fit into, for example, "a new standard of social responsibility in governance, objectives and conduct for for-profit companies."?

The Real Meaning of "Progressive" Politics -- "All of these thinkers contributed to what would become the ethical foundation of the Progressive Movement: a contempt and loathing of "individualism" " By Barry Loberfeld, FrontPageMagazine.com, Sept. 28, 04 frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=15077

[....] So great was this fear of the individual that .... "Progressive education" was developed to meet the individualist threat on the juvenile level, while Progressive collectivization of the economy would meet it on the adult, with the first targets being those unregulated monoliths of "economic power" -- the corporations.

Here is where Progressive myth collides with historical reality. The myth is that these "trusts" were becoming monopolies that .... As new competitors sprang up, and as economic power was diffused throughout an expanding nation, it became apparent to many important businessmen that only the national government could [cartelize] the economy ... [I] t was not the existence of monopoly that caused the federal government to intervene in the economy, but the lack of it. (Kolko) [....]

Which raises the question of just what progressive really tells us. Something that means everything, means nothing. Even as a synonym for all things leftist, can it logically include [.... W]hat we need is a political vocabulary whose terms actually describe the ideas on the table – a proposal evidently more daunting than its modest tenor would suggest.

It is worth reading the whole article.

PROGRESSIVE IS ... Max Sawicky, MaxSpeak, You Listen! May 03, 2005

There seems to be an inordinate amount of confusion or smoke-blowing about the modern (as opposed to classical/libertarian) liberal meaning of the term in regard to Social Security.

In economics, broadly speaking progressive refers to the extent of income equality. [....]

I am sure there are more definitions of progressive ... which makes the term, along with talk about the right and the left, as used in mainstream media just about useless when talking about politics in Canada ... must remember that, myself. Anyway, the MSM tend to think progressive has positive connotations while some of us lean more toward individualism, liberty and less Big Brother government involvement and control ... as I understand the terms.

We wouldn't want to interfere with the free flow of information, would we? Does anyone else see CONTROL writ large? ......... What about the scientist or environmentalist who is not part of that select group, one who has a theory, an idea or even proof of something that does not fit into what is being presented by the "ad free" portal, home of those presenting the "environmental, educational and entertainment content and socially-responsible commercial services"? July 6, 2006: Bud Talkinghorn: David Harris -&- Islam

The politically incorrect CSIS chief, David Harris, is interviewed

David Harris is the ex-CSIS chief for strategic planning. He has been trying to sound the warning about the radicalization of Canadian Muslims for years. In an interview with Maclean's Magazine (June 19, 2006, pp 16-17 ) he expressed some of his misgivings about Canadians' naivete in the face of this gathering threat. I will touch on a few of his most salient points. Harris claims that about 80% of Canada's mosques are controlled by virulently-anti-Western Wahhabi imams. They are funded mainly by the Saudis--the same people who funded al-Qaeda. The greatest danger as he sees it, is that Muslims tend to give over their children to these "teachers". That is a recipe for radicalization of impressionable youth. He also sees a ghetto mentality building up as the various Muslim-Canadian organizations create a near-hysteria about "a backlash" against their community. Other than a few isolated vandalizations of mosques, there has been no backlash. Harris states: "It's not clear whether it's by design or accident that this kind of behaviour has been sustained."

Even more appalling is what he sees as "a burlesque on the theme of political correctness" A case in point was the Toronto police chief trying to pretend that the arrests of the 17 accused terrorists had nothing to do with Islam. Harris's blunt assessment of this absurd stance is "...we are not showing comparable determination (to defeat terrorism) . Political correctness in counter-terrorism could kill us."

He sees twin problems confronting any coherent approach to home grown terrorism. "One of the things is to deal with the near out-of-control immigration and refugee system." He doesn't believe that we can handle the vast numbers that come from anti-liberal, anti-democratic Islamic cultures, which stream into Canada in ever greater numbers. As an example he gives this statistic: "That number (of refugee claimants) has gone from 500 in 1977 to 29,000 this year." He doesn't mention the near impossibility of getting rid of the gangsters, fraudsters and potential terrorists, who launch endless appeals against their deportations. The (Liberal) government(s) tried, for obvious election reasons, to hide the huge costs to the taxpayer, or the danger to Canadians of these people. His second major concern is for liberal elements to honestly face the truth of our sleeper enemy. He concludes: "..without honesty we're lost. And the enemy knows that too, and that's why some of their sophisticated elements are playing us for all we're worth."

© Bud Talkinghorn--Surely, our historical memory is strong enough to recall Neville Chamberlain promising the British "Peace in our time"--if Europe would just appease Hitler and his murderous Nazi ilk.

A sad statistic for a sad London bombing anniversary

July 7th is the anniversary of the London tube terrorist attack. However, there is not universal disgust with these homegrown bombers. In a poll taken of more than 2,000 Britons this week by the Populous polling firm, it was found that 13% of British Muslims, or more than 100,000 adults, think that the July 7 bombers should be regarded as martyrs. This poll is in line with one taken by The Telegraph newspaper two days after the bombings. That one also showed that a majority of British Muslims despised British culture and a frightening number would not have turned in the terrorists if they had knowledge of that imminent attack. It is only when their identities are not protected that they suddenly become the soul of intergrated immigrants, who decry any violence against their fellow citizens. These two polls have alarmed the British public. If Canadians could abandon their ostrich position they would be terrified also. I suspect that our former government had done similar polling about Muslim immigrant attitudes towards Canada, but hid the result to avoid any anti-Muslim immigration backlash. On the other hand, if no government has conducted such a poll, maybe now is the time. You cannot fight a "fifth column" that goes unidentified.

We are in Afghanistan because we know that amongst the Afghan populous there are the nihilistic Taliban trying to drag the country back to the Dark Ages again. If they win, then their al-Qaeda allies will have a giant base for attacks against the West. Meanwhile, the enemy in our midst, even without a confirming poll, have signalled their anti-democratic stances through their actions and deep paranoia. Our efforts to find and arrest potential terrorists is often met with suspicion in our Muslim communities. If in doubt, just check out Ali Hindy, the imam of the Salaheddin mosque in Toronto. He regularily castigates our security officials and still doesn't believe Arabs were the architects of 9/11. He nourishes this culture of victimhood. Hindy is simply the most famous of the Wahhabi-influenced imams--there are others who preach intolerance and isolationism in mosques across Canada. Something must be done to uproot these xenophobic clerics. As it stands they flout every one of the hate laws we have.

We can afford no appeasement in our fight against radical Islam.

After reporting on the Chechens and then the republic of Georgia for Maclean's (Oct. 11 and Oct. 25), Contributing Editor Alexandre Trudeau went to Moscow to assess the state of affairs in the Russian capital 13 years after the fall of the Soviet Union. This week's story is the first of a series. [....]

We sit down for lunch with Dima, his tall blond girlfriend, the rent-a-priests and the bodyguards. Dima is still a young man; in the early nineties, when he was even younger and as the Soviet Union was in its death throes, he made a fortune. How remains unclear, but he had to hastily leave Russia. After a jaunt in Switzerland, he ended up in Canada, buying a huge gated home in Toronto's opulent Bridal Path area.

[....] They hated the fact that I used to hire off-duty Mounties, have them wear their red uniforms and stand guard with Canadian and Russian flags." This spectacle went on for months. Finally, when somebody sloppily opened fire on his home one night, Canadian authorities asked Dima to leave the country. [no reason given ....]

[....] Iosef Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili, a.k.a. Joseph Stalin.

[....] The family story goes something like this: [Joseph] Stalin had a son, Yakov, with his first wife, Ekaterina Svanidze, to whom he was married for just three years until her death in 1907. Yakov died in a Nazi prison camp after Stalin refused to trade him for a captured German general. Yakov's son, Yevgeny, grew up in a military orphanage and went on to become a Red Army colonel. He had two sons: Jacob the painter, and Jacob's older brother Vissarion, a filmmaker. Only in this branch of the family do Stalin's descendants still bear a version of his name, and still live in Georgia. Georgia has a contingent of people proud of Stalin's heritage -- and proud that one of their own once dominated the Soviet Union. But most, and especially those in power now, revile his name. That hasn't been easy for Jacob and his brother. Vissarion found it impossible to find work, and is now doing menial labour in New York City.

[....] The countryside grows poorer, but Tbilisi [....] The man in charge of Georgia's economy is Kakha Bendukidze, an oligarch recently returned from Russia who made his money manufacturing industrial and mechanical equipment. Perhaps because of Russian President Vladimir Putin's manoeuvres against the oligarchs, Bendukidze happily agreed to come back to Georgia to become Saakashvili's minister of economic development.

[....] There will be no quick miracles. [....] Jacob Jugashvili, great-grandson of that wolf among 20th-century wolves, summarizes his fears by saying that "with this kind of primitive free market, I am afraid it is a time of wolves for us all. I loathe the idea of having to tell my kids: be ruthless, and you will triumph." [....]

"The camera is down her throat, the camera is up her nostrils." Sullivan wants to match the excitement of Mozart's music with spectacular effects -- when the Queen of the Night hits a high note, the screen will appear to smash -- and looked for ways to update baroque stage devices. For example, there's a scene in the opera where three spirits (usually played by angelic children) fly onto the stage, an effect often created with some painted clouds and a trapeze. On film, Sullivan will use thousands of digitally generated bubbles for their entrance. [....]

OTTAWA - Heritage Minister Bev Oda is believed to have set aside plans to launch a mandate review of the CBC.

[....] "The government will not be bound to fund the CBC at any level, especially in light of the fact we are about to undertake a review of the CBC's mandate," said Ms. Oda's parliamentary secretary, Jim Abbott, who wrote a report calling for massive cuts and restructuring to CBC television in 2003.

Every day, like clockwork, I note CBC's readers of the news and sundry reporters work to find any negative possible and any tie-in to the US that they can find in order to manufacture reason to distrust the current Harper government. Did you know PM Harper was in Quebec for their St. Jean Baptiste day celebrations to "try" to gain voters, according to CBC spin? The fact that PM Harper went to the region whose local landowners and farmers actually asked for help because they were losing RCMP detachments under the former government's Security Min. Anne McLellan might have had more to do with it. He is attempting to deliver more security; perhaps they are happier about his security moves. That region of Quebec is an area plagued by marijuana or other drug smuggling and/or grow-op businesses if I remember correctly.

John Gleeson: It's your dream, Sheila, not ours Winnipeg Sun : June 29, 2006

[.... In] what was supposed to be a Canada Day column, Sheila Copps was writing about a "passionate Canadian nationalist" she knows who had lost heart for the good fight to keep Quebec in confederation.

"My friend," she wrote, "is a model Canadian, an immigrant from British Columbia who learned fluent French long ago as part of his commitment to the bigger dream." [....]

Now, I don't know about Sheila's friend, but for most people who live in B.C. -- and for that matter, about half of the rest of the country -- learning "fluent French" is hardly an essential way to spend their limited time on this planet, unless of course they want to work for the federal government. [....]

But to tie speaking French to being "a model Canadian" who dreams "the bigger dream" is to flatly marginalize half the population of Canada.

But that's what Sheila's privileged Liberal ilk does.

Rather than build bridges, their Bigger Bilingual Dream Canada actually relegates millions of us to second-class status. And laughably, this divisive and demeaning political game has been shoved down our throats in the interest of "keeping Canada together."

When the game got really mouldy, Sheila's former boss even used the fear of losing Quebec as the raison d'etre for the sponsorship program, which turned out to be nothing less than a criminal enterprise operated out of the office of the prime minister of Canada. [....]

No, we're not going down that road again, Sheila. Frankly, many of us just don't give a hoot any more. Too many English speaking Canadians have been marginalized by the language industry which gave jobs and power to one minority, the French-speaking segment of Canada. We have been led by the nose for too long by a military-hating, UN-loving, UNESCO-courting, France-loving, America-hating group of Quebec's self-appointed elites. It is time for Quebec to see why the rest of this country is valuable, why they should choose Canada, and not the other way around ... as it has been, seemingly forever ... As an alternative, maybe they will join France which is where Quebec's elites have been heading for years ... trying to take the rest of the country with it. Over my dead body! I'm willing to bet that the average Quebecker isn't interested either.

If you don't believe what I wrote about the elites and France, do a little reading.

July 5, 2006: Sceptical re Liberal Finances

Liberal Party of Canada now in the black June 30, 2006 posted by Anne_mcm

Ottawa – The Liberal Party of Canada today filed its annual 2005 return with Elections Canada indicating that it is in a surplus position. This year the Party has declared an accumulated surplus of $440,552.

Now just how did they do that? Perhaps more ....... creative bookkeeping as the one who posted this suggested ... with just a hint of incredulity: "They go from a $1.9 million dollar defict at the end of last election to a surplus of $440,552. So in a matter of a few months they end up in the black."

July 5, 2006: Dear Outraged Anonymous

Re: July 4, 2006: Reaping what we sow -- I attempted to post a response to your comment but it did not show up so here is my response.

I did question: "Perhaps it is time to bring back a wrathful Judeo-Christian Deity? Something has to put some fear of consequences into these young people ... if the parents, the community, the state do not." Note the use of "perhaps" and "if"

It was a question inviting a solution -- any reasonable solution to a pressing problem in our society. I am neither advocating for any particular religion nor demanding a return to what you so obviously hate. I am asking for solutions. What we have now is not working for the good of society.

Your outrage might be better directed at the lack of respect displayed in the example posted and in many other areas of civic and social life. Explain how you would develop respect in society.

I mention a Judeo-Christian deity because it is on that base that our freedoms, democracy, tolerance and other positives have developed. I do not see these qualities in several societies that did not begin with the Judeo-Christian deity. Those countries may have many fine qualities, but the freedoms and democracy that I and others hold dear emanated from reason applied and built upon that Judeo-Christian base.

[....] Just as the terrorists captured before and immediately after 9/11 had almost all passed through Osama bin Laden's boot camps in Afghanistan, today suspects targeted by Western intelligence agencies are increasingly graduates of Lashkar camps in Pakistan.

From the Virginia Jihad Network in the United States to an Australian cell broken up by police and arrests last month in the United Kingdom, a common denominator has been Lashkar-e-Tayyiba. A number of suspects associated with the alleged Toronto cell are also thought to have links to prominent members of Lashkar and a few may have travelled to Pakistan for training.

In addition, an al-Qaeda recruiting DVD that witnesses have said was handed out at the Salaheddin Islamic Centre by alleged Toronto terror ringleader Fahim Ahmad makes mention of "our brothers" in Kashmir. Lashkar was also a topic of discussion on Al-Tibyyan, a jihadist Internet forum used by several Canadian suspects. [....]

Note: There is a new post below.

Happy Fourth of July to Americans at home and abroad.

Belatedly, I hope Canadians celebrated Canada Day with gusto on July 1. It was a great day for lobster and wine, books and conversation, along with finches.

Thanks J.

July 4, 2006: Bud Talkinghorn: Trilogy

Late posting: I apologize, Bud, and to readers who like Bud's work but I have had power outages lately and I have been busy with July 1, as well. This should have been posted previously but, slave labour, Bud ... it isn't what it used to be.

The incredible tale of a Canadian white-collar rogue

White-collar crime is exploding across the entire continent of North America. The police know that their fraudulent economic investigation cases should mount into the billions stolen, crimes with pay-offs that no professional bank robber could conceive of, millions bilked with a few phone calls, or very creative accounting. The police also admit how powerless they are to solve most of these types of crimes. Before World.com, Enron and Tyco, we Canadians ruled the roost for over-the top fraud. We had Bre-X, a scam so massive that it cost shareholders billions. Nobody was ever convicted. The president (assumed ringleader) died prematurally in the Bahamas; another co-conspirator, Felderhoff, hides in the Cayman Islands, while the supposedly-dead third scamster, Guzman, has been sighted in Brazil. The RCMP stated that the file has been closed on this case. A case that was considered to be the largest stock fraud in history and the boiler room boys break into another chorus of "For they are jolly useless fellows".

An example of how white-collar crime succeeds can be found in The Western Standard's article on Michael Ritter (June 19, 2006, pp 29 to 33). Ritter pretended to be a Grey's Inn lawyer from London and a graduate from the London School of Economics. At various times he also pretended to be Peter Knight, Adam Michael, or (my favourite) Philippe d'Orleans. These personas pretended to be foreign diplomats, Swiss bankers, and decorated lawyers. He wasn't even a lawyer. He got away with these elaborate masquerades because he was so charming and certain people in the government of Alberta saw him as the golden boy. His advancement in the Alberta government was so rapid that he argued cases before the Supreme Court. As a openly professed gay, he funded pro-gay Supreme Court challeges and helped sue Stockwell day over defamation charges. Eventually, he left government and founded a "financial services company". The real service was laundering tens of millions for two fraudsters in the United States. The police finally brought down his empire. On one deal, Ritter skimmed off ten million from a $43 million embezzlement. Who's going to complain? The crooked stock broker from Merrill Lynch or some other stock brokerage? I guess there is no honour among thieves.

The Americans are aggressively seeking Ritter's extradition to face various charges, but for now, he sits in Edmonton remand. Maybe after his sentencing here for defrauding Canadians, Alberta will grant the Yanks their extradition. The multiple sentences will give him plenty of time to recollect his former life as a "lawyer" with a European chateau and two private planes. His life of deception is a fascinating read.

The willful blindness to this swindler by politicians, lawyers, and the social elites is informative also. Almost none of these notables in Edmonton want to play the "six degrees of separation" game when it comes to this scoundrel. Nevertheless, when confronted with their advancement of Ritter's "legal" career, there are the skunks who don't want to admit that this polecat stinks. One ex-politician called Ritter "a man of impeccable integrity".

Losing the war on drugs

If this guy, Ritter, doesn't blow your mind, then read the autobiographical account by Jerry Speziale called "Without a Badge". While this DEA agent's tale of huge drug busts is impressive, the real story is about Paul Lir Alexander, a confidential informant. If you ever thought we were losing the war on drugs, this man's story confirms it. Alexander had enormous contacts in Latin America; he worked both sides of the legal fence--setting up elaborate drug busts for the authorities while he made millions importing cocaine and laundering drug money. A description of his contacts in Guatemala: "Once we got to the Camino Real (the most luxurious hotel in Guatemala City) the Paul Lir Alexander show kicked into high gear. With his suit jacket draped over his shoulder, Paul roamed the lobby as if he owned all Central America. He knew everybody. He spoke to his far-flung friends--everyone from diplomats to dopers, socialites to hookers, politicians to pimps--in four fluent languages....and Paul always had stacks of quetzales (Guatemalan currency), throwing his greenbacks around in his twenty-four hour a day masquerade as the biggest, baddest coke transporter in all of South America. Always in control, his drink of choice was, of course, fruit juice." In one case, while working for the DEA, he was arrested transporting half a million up from Colombia. He was so influential as a go-between in the drug trade that he had to be released. Even after this fracas, while he was helping bust loads of coke, he was importing thousands of pounds of it, embedded in electrical transformers from Brazil. It is a world that even Hollywood can hardly portray dramatically enough.

I remember an example of the "lost war" on drugs. Years ago the DEA was announcing that they had made good inroads on the imported marijuana scene. They gave the statistic of grass seized that year. It sounded impressive, until the next day there was a report of just one Brazilian plantation take-down. That pot farm had more marijuana than the DEA had seized in a year. The Brazilian drug cops speculated that it had been running for years.

© Bud Talkinghorn--If there must be a "war on drugs", at least go after the really destructive drugs like meth or heroin.

A joke for Canada Day

Ms. Nada Farooq, the wife of one of the terrorist suspects has been blogging away like a typical Canadian. The main difference is that she habitually refers to Canada as "that filth". Aside from the economic, political and other advantages of her adopted country, compared to the dead end country she came from, she still despises Canadian life. Ms. Farooq has expressed such multicutural sentiments as having "homosexuals crushed under a wall, like the Saudis do". Her views are shared by some of the other wives of the accused terrorists. Ms. Farooq was the administrator of a forum which spouted vitriol about our "filthy" culture to the Muslim teens in the local high school. Now two of these teens are part of the alleged terrorist plot. They wanted Islamic heaven through martyrdom, but they will have to settle for infidel hell.

So with this particular profile, we are astonished to discover that Ms. Farooq was going to be a speaker at a Toronto assembly called "On our own terms: Muslim Youth speak out!" This is where the joke kicks in. The gathering was sponsored by Students against Islamophobia. Ms. Farooq didn't show up, much to the relief of the organizers, I'm sure. Nothing like having a speaker jabber away about crushing homosexuals to death, the sluttishness of most Canadian women, and the need to not vote--in short most of Canadian customs are haram--forbidden. This event comes on the heels of the controversy over the British Imam, Haq, bringing his anti-Western message to some Toronto Islamic youth conference. Now we hear that the government has banned him from Canada though he was heard by video.

I don't think the Islamic community has understood from whence Canadian Islamophobia could spring. They don't seem to understand that despising one's adopted country makes them highly suspect, especially when that country has granted them a far better life than any of the woebegone states they fled.

© Bud Talkinghorn--The infamous Farooq forum has suddenly been taken down; however it is too late to hide the hatred expressed. The Globe and Mail has lots more of these blog entries to expose.
