The maestro had walked out on the orchestra for an unscheduled five-month sabbatical and told a U.S. newspaper there were "rotten apples" in the ensemble who have "created an atmosphere that has to be eradicated."

Mr. Zukerman's current contract was to expire in August, 2007, and the renewal will keep him at the NAC through August, 2011. [....]
