In addition, a contract for the terminal's offshore facilities, including the receiving pier, went to Kiewit-Weeks-Sandwell Partnership, a consortium of Peter Kiewit Sons Co of St. John's, N.L.; Weeks Marine of Cranford, N.J.; and Sandwell Engineering of Vancouver. [....]

SAINT JOHN, NB, May 17 /CNW/ - Canaport(TM) LNG, the partnership between Repsol YPF and Irving Oil, today announced that it has awarded the on-shore and off-shore Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contracts and issued the final notice to proceed for the construction of the first new liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving terminal on the East Coast of North America in decades. Repsol also announced this week that it has completed the agreements to transport natural gas from the Canaport LNG Terminal to markets in Canada and the Northeast US via the Brunswick Pipeline and an expansion of the Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline system in the US.

SNC-CENMC, G.P., a partnership between SNC-Lavalin Inc., Canada's largest engineering and construction firm, and Saipem S.p.A. of Milan, Italy, was awarded the Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) contract for onshore facilities and jetty topsides, providing full procurement and supervisory responsibilities for the onshore portion of the project.

Kiewit-Weeks-Sandwell Partnership, a consortium of Peter Kiewit Sons Co of St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador; Weeks Marine of Cranford, New Jersey; and Sandwell Engineering of Vancouver, British Columbia, was awarded the EPC contract for the terminal's offshore facilities, including the receiving pier. Update comment May 24, 06: In my experience, media coverage in the province is hardly balanced. Coverage is either absent or rather negative for anything conservative, with a few exceptions, but overall, coverage appears to be controlled by leftist/Liberal interests. Do these dovetail with the interests of this prominent family? Not only have the Irvings massive business interests in the province, but their ownership of some, if not all, local newspapers means that there is little investigative journalism. I suspect there is self-censorship on the part of journalists. The May 23 announcement by Frank McKenna of the funding for a hospital MRI unit by the TD Bank is an example. Did journalists explore the reasons Frank would be in NB to announce this? Why would the bank ally itself with a potential Liberal leadership candidate? What is the business interest? What are the political implications? I await that journalistic exploration.

Update on Iran and there are other posts on it if you scroll down.

Iran's leaders mischaracterized Los Angeles Times, May 20, 06

There have been articles in the news concerning a bill in Iran. Accounts differ as to whether non-Muslims are gong to have to wear identifying badges or colours -- or whether it is Iran trying to make everyone dress in what would be considered acceptable clothing -- clothing that would differentiate them from Muslims. Is it so Muslims may avoid contamination by infidels?

This is supposed to be a copy of the original by Chris Wattie, National Post. Published: Friday, May 19, 2006, posted on CNEWS Forum by contraryminded. 5/20/2006 11:20:05

Several experts are casting doubt on reports that Iran had passed a law requiring the country’s Jews and other religious minorities to wear coloured badges identifying them as non-Muslims.

The Iranian embassy in Ottawa also denied the Iranian government had passed such a law.

A news story and column by Iranian-born analyst Amir Taheri in yesterday’s National Post reported that the Iranian parliament had passed a sweeping new law this week outlining proper dress for Iran’s majority Muslims, including an order for Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear special strips of cloth.

According to the reports, Jews were to wear yellow cloth strips, called zonnar, while Christians were to wear red and Zoroastrians blue.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre and Iranian expatriates living in Canada had confirmed that the order had been passed, although it still had to be approved by Iran’s “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect. [. . . . ]

Lenovo: IBM & Thinkpad -- Bugged?

US fears Chinese PCs may be bugged AFP, smh.com, May 20, 06

The US State Department will disconnect 900 new Chinese-made computers from its most top secret network for fear that they may have been fitted with spying equipment.

But the department's purchase of about 16,000 personal computers (PCs) from Chinese company Lenovo raises serious questions given accusations that China is aggressively spying on the United States, Republican lawmaker Frank Wolf said.

Word of the State Department order for the desktop PCs was made public in March, 10 months after Lenovo completed its $US1.75 billion acquisition of IBM's PC division.

[....] The Chinese firm kept the right to use the IBM name on its PCs and the "ThinkPad" brand on laptop computers.

[....] A Taiwanese man, Ko-Suen Moo, has pleaded guilty in the United States to spying for Beijing. He was accused by the US District Attorney's office in Miami of seeking illegally to export missiles and aircraft parts to China.

Fortunately, ex-Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan assured us that Canada is safe ...... no Chinese spies here ...... and we believe her. Don't we? Don't you? ...... Yes, I jest.

The Thinkpad had a great reputation but as soon as I heard it had been sold to China, that was the end of considering buying it for many, me included. No way! When the Chinese bug their own citizens and prevent free speech, why would I support one of their notepad businesses? Even knowing a bit--not much--about security? Fuggetaboutit for most of what is made in China. I prefer to support my neighbours and North American businesses ....... with my paltry spending.

Howard lauds U.S. in commons -- Anti-terrorism speech Mike Blanchfield, CanWest News Service, May 19, 2006

[....] lauded the common economic, environmental and security interests of Canada and Australia, [....]

[....] the United States has been a remarkable power for good in the world and that the decency and hope that power and purpose of the United States represents to the world is something that we should deeply appreciate."

Mr. Howard said the United States shares with Australia and Canada a belief in spreading democracy, individual liberty and free enterprise where the less fortunate are protected by a social safety net.

"I would have for those around the world who would want to see a reduced American role in the affairs of our globe, some quiet advice, and that is: Be careful what you wish for, because a retreating America will leave a more vulnerable world."
[....]

PM Howard, a gutsy leader and a principled politician ...... the kind who inspires the centrist mainstream media, (e.g. Globe and Mail and those termed an "elite" who support the leftist bilge) to include letters almost unrelentingly negative about the US and its President, PM Harper, and now, PM Howard. The Centre's elitist control freaks, along with the MSM so used to suckling at the CRTC CanCon teat, have a visceral hatred for Conservatives, fearing any change to their power. Evidently, they hate the US (Republican) President Bush and his war against "insurgents", as CBC would have it, but which is actually a war against Islamist terrorists. I can only conclude that leftists and Liberals hate the rollicking debate which is part and parcel of citizens' exercise of freedom in the US ... too messy and unpredictable for those who like CONTROL .........

Where may the rest of us sign up for TV, radio, etc. which are outside the purview of the CanCon coercive crowd? Along with the MSM/leftists/Liberals, include the internet access provider companies heavily indebted (I believe) to the kind of hands-on control that has been mandated by the CRTC under the watchful eye of the (leftist/socialist/Liberal) government(s) and their lackeys. Aliant in the East is part of Bell Globemedia. Both Aliant Internet service and Rogers just happen to be headquartered in Moncton, seat of power, though Fredericton is still called the capital. Rogers didn't survive in the East without cultivating power--that would be leftists/Liberals, not Conservatives, even though occasionally a Conservative government headed by someone who knows the right people to court will get into power.

Wouldn't freedom from controlling government be a breath of fresh air?

Instead, ....... we have the result of 40+ years of the %^$&*! ....... gradual decline of our freedoms, a concomitant rise in the power of control freaks and those to whom "some" rights are a bludgeon with which to beat down other people's rights and freedoms.

For those who include ex-PM Mulroney in the Centre, I read somewhere that he had to give in to the control freaks (particularly in Quebec) in the last year(s) of his administration to get anything accomplished. I have no idea whether it is true, but do check the cross-pollination between political interests, $$$, perquisites and those who have power in that province. It might prove fruitful.

I love PM Harper's approach to the media, particularly the ones who are leftists and Liberals; now, he might get us some freedom to hear many voices. The Centre will not like it; the rest of us will.

Finally, someone in the media noticed Paul Martin -- MIA on the military Afghanistan vote -- working on his cuddle up to the natives--or is that the chiefs?--"Kelowna Accord" bill. Perhaps Afghanistan is too hot to handle?

House was one Martin short for Afghan vote -- Paul Martin had to leave House for meetings: aide May 20, 06

News this week that two male constables are planning what is believed to be the RCMP's first same-sex marriage has made some in the government nervous. Constables Jason Tree and David Connors, who live in Meteghan, N.S., will be married on June 30 in Yarmouth, N.S., and will wear their red uniforms, according to reports in a Halifax newspaper. They expect to have a number of police officers at the ceremony. Some officials in Ottawa flagged the story -- in particular because of the uniforms -- and are worried about MPs making any homophobic comments that might reflect badly on the government.

I wish people would remember that each officer is somebody's son and you won't be asking their sexual orientation if you need their help. I may want children to have two parents of the opposite sex but that does not mean that I endorse insulting them or their families.

[....] MPs Keith Martin, Pat Martin and Tony Martin were all there [for the Afghanistan vote]. But Paul Martin, who was in charge of the country when Canada committed to sending troops, was notably absent during the important Afghanistan vote on Wednesday night. So where was he? He was in the House on Wednesday [earlier], tabling his private members bill about implementing the Kelowna Accord, then left for meetings in Toronto, said an aide in his office.

Search: Stockwell Day , cellphones and BlackBerrys in the Senate , Senator Kinsella

The photo of the happily engaged RCMP couple made it to the front page of the G & M either the day PM Howard was due to address the Parliament, or the previous day, as I remember. There are issues of import that rise above what a Conservative might say, I suppose, particularly if he supports Pres. Bush and talks about security and terrorists (not insurgents). There is no good reason both could not have been included on the front page.

The day that the PLO's Arafat spoke to Canada's House of Commons, was the text of his speech--as opposed to media reports of it--in the newspapers of the day? Check. Why do I think that it probable that the murderous, thieving--money-siphoning to his wife in Paris-thug leader was given a much different reception in the Centre's mainstream media and in Parliament? It might be worth checking.

What is the truth of this? There are differing statements on the situation.

Iran: Jews, Christians Must Wear Badges With Carl Limbacher and NewsMax.com Staff, May 19, 2006

In a move reminiscent of the Nazis forcing Jews to wear a Star of David insignia, Iran’s parliament has reportedly passed a law requiring Jews, Christians and other religious minorities to wear color-coded badges to identify them as non-Muslims.

The law would also set a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear "standard Islamic garments.”

The law, which must be approved by Iran's "Supreme Leader" Ali Khamenei before taking effect, requires Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes. Christians would be forced to wear red badges and Zoroastrians would wear blue cloth, according to Canada’s National Post.
[....] Ahmadinejad has repeatedly described the Holocaust as a myth and earlier this year announced Iran would host a conference to re-examine the Nazis' "Final Solution."

Ali Behroozian, an Iranian exile living in Toronto, said the new law would make religious minorities immediately identifiable and allow Muslims to avoid contact with non-Muslims. [....]

Oh, well, then, no problem ...........

Howard compares Iran to Nazi Germany May 20, 06, smh.com / Sydney Morning Herald, May 20, 06

Prime Minister John Howard was among three world leaders who today said an Iranian bill, which reportedly would force non-Muslims to wear coloured badges in public, was akin to Nazi Germany.

However, Teheran emphatically denied the report, in a Canadian newspaper, that the law would force Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear a yellow, red or blue strip of cloth, respectively, on their clothes.

The National Post newspaper, citing human rights groups, had reported that Iran's parliament had passed a law this week that set a public dress code and required non-Muslims to wear special insignia. [The article was removed from their site pending confirmation, I suspect.]

[....] Mr Howard was joined in the attack on Iran by the US and Canada, who said they had no details on the issue beyond the newspaper report.

[....] The Iranian parliament is debating legislation which would discourage women from wearing western clothing and would increase taxes on imported clothes. It would also promote the wearing of Islamic-style garments.

[....] "The bill is not related to minorities. It is only about clothing," [MP Emad Afroogh] said.

Sounds like identifiable clothing to me. If you don't wear "Islamic-style garments", guess what? Why you might be stoned. Under the Taliban in Afghanistan, Hindus and other infidels were forced to wear a yellow triangle. Not too far from the pre-WWW2 situation, I would say. Of course, Canadian mainstream media could question the Iranian Ambassador and Iranians who live in Canada, who have contact with family in Iran.

It was so much easier when the Liberals told the media what to write and what Canadians should think, wasn't it? No wonder ........

Of oil, Mexico, immigration and politics -- Bush trying to avoid anti-U.S. sentiment south of the Rio Grande Diane Francis, Financial Post, May 19, 2006

Nearly one-third of all Mexicans now live in the United States, and immigration has been a safety valve for a country that finds it impossible to create enough new jobs every year for its growing population. Besides that, Mexicans in the United States send home billions of dollars every year in "remittances" to loved ones, helping bolster its economy.

Mexico is America's second-biggest supplier of oil, after Canada, and any draconian action on immigration or the border by Washington would guarantee the next president of Mexico -- to be elected this summer -- will adopt a populist, anti-gringo attitude.

Concern is that Mexico's next president would respond to tougher border measures by behaving like Venezuela's Hugo Chavez, an anti-American populist who pledges to divert oil away from the United States.

Memory Lane

Terrorism -- Hansard, Oct. 2001

Mr. Stockwell Day (Leader of the Opposition, Canadian Alliance): Mr. Speaker, it is day 21 since the terrorist attack. The United Nations Security Council has now given Canada 90 days to toughen up its refugee system.

Terrorists do not operate according to government rules and they will certainly not operate according to government timelines when it comes to planning their next actions. [....]

Mr. Stockwell Day (Leader of the Opposition, Canadian Alliance): .... Yesterday, the vice-president of the union representing our immigration officers said that the selection of refugee claimants proposed by the government would prevent Canada from deporting such individuals. This could lead to an even longer delay in connection with the long list of 27,000 people to be deported.

Why is the government adding another delay in the deportation of people considered inadmissible to Canada?

[....] Hon. Elinor Caplan (Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, in fact the proposals in Bill C-11 streamline the procedures, consolidate our processes, make it easier for us to bar access to the refugee determination system to those who pose a security risk, make it faster for us to identify those who are not in need of our protection, and make it faster for us to be able to remove those who we do not want to keep in Canada.

Mr. Stockwell Day (Leader of the Opposition, Canadian Alliance): Mr. Speaker, we have heard it will take six months, not 90 days. We do not see how it will be faster, especially when an RCMP officer responsible for the immigration program told the Senate that in Australia: “--if a refugee comes to their shore without the appropriate documentation....he will be detained up to the time that he is appropriately identified” or “he will be sent home. We do not have that in Bill C-11”.

[....] Mr. Grant Hill (Macleod, Canadian Alliance): Mr. Speaker, members of this caucus did vote against the bill because frankly it is too weak.
[Translation]

It is now clear that there are far too many weaknesses in the legislation the government has introduced to reform our refugee system.

Actually, ex-Min. Elinor Caplin might want to re-read her words ... which might contain something she would like to revise.

Amarjit Singh, a Canadian resident arrested in $1.1-million marijuana smuggling ring May 19, 2006, canada.com

The suspect, who was attempting to cross the boarder at Lewiston, N.Y. on May 14, produced an invoice for a commercial shipment of bales of grow mix destined for Alabama. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, using gamma-ray technology to examine the truck's contents, discovered an inconsistency in the freight. Fourteen boxes with 154 kilograms of vacuum-sealed hydroponic marijuana were found within. Amarjit Singh, a citizen of India with resident status in Canada, was arrested on federal charges of importation and possession with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance.

Saying the gang established control in city neighbourhoods through "intimidation and violence," Blair said the raids have "surgically removed" the organization's leadership, making the community safer. [....]

"There are shotguns and pistols, 14 handguns, 2 AR-15 rifles, 2 Mak-10 automatic machine pistols and an AK-47 assault rifle," Blair said.

Police also took over 15 kilos of cocaine and large amounts of marijuana and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash.

The mothers mean well, but where do they and other activist groups stop? What will be next that some group doesn't like and, if they have the moral suasion, they will be able to get the media onside to pressure legislators ...... and then, whose rights win out?

Remember, some doctors are now starting to refuse to treat people who smoke, drink too much, ...... and what comes next? Could schools refuse students who are disruptive or who don't do their work? Could stores refuse to serve gays? ......Okay, there are some rights that are special, if not to everyone, at least to the mainstream media / CBC ....... but what is a believing Christian forbidden to say or write? (Think of a BC teacher (?) who wrote a letter to a newspaper or otherwise mentioned his beliefs about it, if I have that correct.) ..... and what about parents who aren't too thrilled about the dissemination of information on sex including gay sex, abortion, et cetera in school? ...... What about the citizenry who know what part of the city is most violent and who--what group(s)--people it, but political correctness means they mustn't talk about nor admit the obvious; it might be construed as hate speech if people mention a particular group of weapons-carrying, violent, drug dealing thugs ....... racism, you know ..... and it goes on and on.

Under the Liberals Canadians have had many rights curtailed, some with good intentions, for example, having to do with alcohol and driving, some anti-democratic where Canadians' right to speak their minds has been curtailed ....... even when hindsight has shown that it is obvious they should have spoken out. What rights are paramount, by what criteria, and who decides? It is only free speech when speech is disagreeable to some and hence, not wanted; otherwise, it is simply an agreeable talk-fest among like-thinking individuals.

A worthy cause -- Christian belief alert

This letter has been making the rounds.

If you are not a believer, skip this. For believers read on. For those sitting on the fence about belief, this shouldn't hurt you and might help her.

Prayer request for Gary and Cindy Hogan. Gary is serving in Iraq while his young wife is fighting cancer here. Prayer is a powerful thing. Tough times don't last... Tough people do!!!

My name is Gary Hogan. Some of you receiving this know me, some do not. My wife, Cindy, is 32 years old and has just been diagnosed 3 days ago with stage 4 cervical cancer and her chances for survival are very slim.

She was pregnant with our second child and miscarried recently at 3 months, and now we know why. This is a request for you to forward this e-mail to everyone you know asking for prayer. The more people that pray for her to be healed, the better. It only takes a second to hit "forward". Please do it and don't delete this, your prayer can, and perhaps will, save her life.

Please pray and ask everyone you know to pray for the HEALING of Cindy and the removal of all cancer in her body, so she may enjoy all that life has to offer, and to continue to be a wonderful mother to our 5 year old son, Michael.

The power of Prayer is unsurpassed. I want the whole world to have her in their prayers the next few weeks. God will hear our cry. Please do not be offended by my plea. This is only a request for your help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this and helping with our request for healing! No words can express the power we have when we each do a little to come together.

Regards, Cindy's in-love husband - Gary

Thank you, and please send it to the far reaches of our world.

PM Howard's Visit, Afghan Deployment -&- Gun Registry

PM Howard's Visit and Speech

CBC is so obvious. Yesterday, there were two events of import:

* The father of Captain Goddard delivered an eloquent and moving public statement on his daughter's life and death, and

* The Prime Minister of Australia addressed the Canadian Parliament after being introduced by PM Harper.

Both, considering their interest to Canadians, could have been taped and played one after the other. Instead, CBC interrupted the live coverage of an historic visit and speech in the House of Commons during PM Harper's introduction of PM Howard. CBC presented, instead, the full speech by Mr. Goddard. They probably hoped it would be an anti-war speech. It was not, nor were the words of Captain Goddard's husband, heard later. Why could both not have been presented consecutively? That is what recordings/tapes are for.

CBC expected that interested Canadians would not notice? They are fools, their biases evident for all to see. CPAC to the rescue ....... Naturally, CBC's subsequent news coverage (that I caught) did not present the full speech. Democracy? Trustworthy?

This is the CBC, which manages to black out some key speeches, lines, reports, et cetera ..... accidents, of course, at key times ... enough that I have noted it.

Jennifer Ditchburn: Harper looks up to his 'mate' down under

[....] Around Ottawa, Conservatives spoke reverently of Howard's masterful grasp of what voters want to hear.

In the last Aussie election, that meant a direct pitch to "mainstream" Australians with middle-class tax cuts, a tough stance on illegal immigration, and a determination to bar same-sex marriage.

"He's provided stable government, low taxes, an unapologetic sense of where Australia is in the world," said Tory MP Scott Reid, who once lived in Australia as a visiting scholar. [....]

Note: Paul Martin skipped the vote on extending the troops' mission to Afghanistan.

He had been in the House earlier. Note also the photo accompanying this article: Frank McKenna, the guy who snowed NB with his 60-70 "communications" aides whose real job was to make Premier Frank look good during his tenure of talking a good line , while accomplishing little economically. [Was he busy courting the "right people" for the Liberal leadership run later? -- I remember reading that he had been vetted by a powerful Quebecker ... but you'll have to check further.]

Joan Bryden: Harper may have used vote to ensare Ignatieff in Afghan trap

And Bob Rae? Just read what he had to say ... a perfect NDP turned Liberal.

OTTAWA (CP) - After narrowly winning the vote to prolong the risky Afghanistan mission, a triumphant Stephen Harper crossed the floor of the Commons and threaded his way to the back of the Liberal benches to shake hands with Michael Ignatieff.

The prime minister's gesture may well turn out to be the political equivalent of the kiss of death for Ignatieff's bid to lead the Liberal party.

Ostensibly, Harper was simply thanking the rookie Toronto MP and acclaimed scholar for being one of only 24 Liberals to support the Conservative government's motion to extend the Afghanistan military deployment for two years. [....]

Scott Brison stood on principle and voted with the Conservatives. Good show, Scott.

Search how the rest of the Liberal "leadership" team voted, bearing in mind that it was the Liberals who sent our soldiers to Afghanistan in the first place ... so as not to have to join the Americans in Iraq. (ex-PM) Jean Chretien did not go to Parliament for permission, I don't believe; it was his decision ... see below.

Political wizardry by the man from Oz (sour grapes from Canada's CBC on John Howard of Aus's visit) -- CBC News Indepth: Reality Check, May 18, 2006, Robert Sheppard, Posted on 05/18/2006 10:26:33 PM EDT by NZerFromHK

As addresses by visiting dignitaries go, this one didn't have quite the same historical heft as namesake Winston Churchill's in 1941, and his famous British defiance in the teeth of the Nazi onslaught: "Some chicken. Some neck."

But for Australian Prime Minister John Winston Howard (the middle name a direct homage to the British war leader), his speech to a joint session of Canada's Parliament was by turns elegant, charming and delightfully mischievous.

[.... re: anti-military / anti-war involvement] But in our case, we have a long and almost institutionally entrenched strain of that to contend with, something that is part of the Quebec fact and has been with us from the Boer War right through the Conscription Crisis. And it has shaped our politics and our national conscience accordingly. [....]

Comment: "Robert Sheppard began his career at the Montreal Star (may it rest in peace), spent 22 years at the Globe and Mail and was recently senior editor at Maclean's magazine. He has co-authored a book on the Canadian Constitution and writes on a variety of subjects."

Now do you have a fairly good idea of his politics? Perhaps a stint at the CBC .... maybe then he could become the next GG. He would be a MSM darling.

Terrorism

Ms. Alexa McDonough (Halifax, NDP): Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Prime Minister. The United States is parceling out to selective allies its evidence linking Osama bin Laden to the September 11 terrorist attacks. This reinforces the perception that while the coalition against terrorism is truly international the march toward military action is not.

Will the Prime Minister call upon the United Nations today to establish an international tribunal and call upon our American allies to place their evidence before an international body like the United Nations?

Right Hon. Jean Chrétien (Prime Minister, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, I had occasion to talk with the president not long ago. The evidence that is available to the leaders of nations is evidence that cannot be shared in public at the same time.

It is very confidential information that we need in order to make sure that bin Laden and his terrorists are punished for the terrible acts they have done. It is not the time to debate that type of information publicly. It is the time to do the job and get them to face justice.

Ms. Alexa McDonough (Halifax, NDP): Mr. Speaker, we are not asking that the Prime Minister telegraph the evidence into every Canadian household. We are asking that the evidence be brought before an international body.

The Prime Minister says that he is satisfied the evidence links Osama bin Laden to the terrorist attacks, but the evidence he is willing to accept has not been brought before Canada's cabinet, much less before the United Nations.

In view of that, how could the Prime Minister even consider asking Canadian families to sacrifice their sons or daughters?

Right Hon. Jean Chrétien (Prime Minister, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, it is not the time to make the type of speech the member is making. It is the time for all the people who want to fight terrorism to be united and defeat it . That is what we have to do now.

Military History: Afghanistan involvement MapleLeafWeb.com

How Are Canadian Forces Working With American Forces in Afghanistan?

In its contribution to the war against terrorism in Afghanistan, Canada established an organization called Canadian Joint Task Force South West Asia.
This organization encompasses all Canadian military assets and activities in the Afghan region. Its headquarters is located in Tampa, Florida, alongside the US Central Command. The Commander of Canadian Joint Task Force South West Asia works closely with American military leadership at US Central Command.

Canadian troops in Afghanistan are operating under a joint command structure headed by US General Tommy Franks. [Subsequently, a Canadian led this group, I believe. Check further.] This is not unlike arrangements in previous theatres of war and peacekeeping. However, military officials in Ottawa retain the right to turn down assignments. As National Defence spokesman Clarence Roussel stated, “Whatever orders they [Canadian troops] receive would have been cleared through the [Canadian] chief of defense staff.” “If, for any reason, the order would place Canadian troops at an unreasonable risk . . . then there would be an intervention.” [....]

The following is a partial list of coalition countries and their contributions to the war against terrorism in Afghanistan (as of February 26, 2002). [....]

Note: October 07, 2001 -- Prime Minister Jean Chretien announces that Canada will provide military contributions to operations in Afghanistan -- Does anyone remember Jean Chretien putting any of this to a vote in the House of Commons? ...... But of course, for the mainstream media whinging about keeping the military in Afghanistan to do what is necessary ...... that was a LIBERAL Prime Minister. Therein lies the difference in the media coverage .......

Dear Mr. Prime Minister, a letter from Lawyers Against War

1) Stated Legal Basis for Our Use of Force:

We note that on Jan 17, 2001 Our Minister of Defense stated:

“As you know, the multinational military response to the terrorist acts of September 11 began in mid-October. Canada is responding militarily on the basis of article 51 of the UN charter, and there have in fact been three resolutions of the Security Council in support of the use of that article in this case. That article of the UN charter allows states to exercise the right of individual and collective self-defense.”

Art Eggleton evidence before House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs – (Jan 17, 2002 10:10 AM)

We note that he continued;

“This campaign was initially launched in the wake also of NATO's invoking Article 5 of the Washington treaty, which collectively implements the UN charter's right to self-defense when a NATO member state has been attacked.”

Art Eggleton evidence before House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs - Jan 17, 2002 10:10 AM

[....] 5) Stated Purpose of Mission:

We note that on Jan 17, 2002 our Defense Minister stated that our actions were not in keeping with Canada’s traditional role of peacekeeping:

“Now to the nature of the mission in Kandahar. This is not a peacekeeping mission. The military campaign in Afghanistan is not over yet. Our troops will be carrying out a variety of tasks, some of which may involve combat operations.”

Art Eggleton evidence before House of Commons Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs - Jan 17, 2002 10:10 AM

We note that this mission was under the auspices of neither NATO, nor under the UN body ISAF;

Remember, the above is from Lawyers Against War but there are points worth considering.

Gun Registry

Gun registry successfully kept guns out of the United States posted by Daralundy -- Angry in the Great White North May 18, 2006, Steve Janke

Gun registry successfully kept guns out of the United States The people for and against the long-gun registry have been tossing allegations back and forth about how effective the registry has been in fighting crime. Often this takes the form of statistics. For: An average of 5,000 queries a day are made by law enforcement agencies. Against: Virtually all the queries are automatically generated by local police computers whenever any kind of information is accessed, including outstanding parking fines. The problem is that it is hard to really understand how useful the registry is when you look at broad collections...

Gun Registry "This is from the freedom of information act, about how many times the data base is being used." posted by wagccan, May 18, 06

I like this part

"For example, one Saskatoon City Police officer told us he checked one name in the system and it took more than 6 hours and it came back negative. On January 22, 2003, CBC Radio in Saskatchewan reported: "Police in Regina say they haven't yet had a lot of use for the new gun registry. The Canadian Police Association claims the controversial database provides useful information in less than one second. However, Regina officials cannot confirm that figure. Sgt. Rick Bourassa says officers in his city do not use the data-base very often.” On December 4, 2002, CFRA talk show host Michael Harris reported that officials from the Police Association of Ontario told him that they fail to get the information requested from the registration system 95% of the time."

On April 1, 2003, the Canadian Firearms Centre website stated: “2,328,360 CFRO [Canadian Firearms Registration On-Line] queries have been made by police and other law enforcement officials since December 1, 1998.” Please provide records and reports showing: (1) the number of requests by police, (2) the number of requests by law enforcement officials, (3) the number of requests by Canadian Firearms Centre staff, (4) the number of requests by Chief Firearms Offices and Firearms Officers, (5) the number of requests by NWEST personnel, (6) the number of requests from each province and territory, (7) the number of requests by type of information requested, and (8) the number of requests that resulted in the requestor actually receiving the information requested.

May 18, 2006

May 18, 2006: Welcome, PM Howard of Australia

Update: There is a new post below on activists and networks, entitled "May 18, 2006: Memory Lane & Questions"

The Centre is spinning ... out of control

John Ibbitson: Australia's Prime Minister Howard has a lot in common with Harper -- a piece of partisan journalism leaning more toward nasty than to welcoming a fellow Commonwealth Prime Minister Globe and Mail, May 17, 2006

Usually, only statesmen of Great Powers or great interest are asked to address the Parliament of Canada: Vicente Fox, Kofi Annan, Tony Blair, Vaclav Havel, Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton.

So who asked John Howard?

[Today] Australia's Prime Minister will address the combined House of Commons and Senate.

The implication? My guess? That anyone invited by a Prime Minister from the West would not pass muster in the Centre ... where they know which people are meant to be courted or honoured ... a hold-over from the good old days of Librano$ Canada.

Statesmen? Kofi Annan, he of the sullied reputation at UN and its oil-for-food scandal, the endless talk fests and the underwhelming accomplishments ... think the Congo, Rwanda, Darfur. But the Liberals parroted the polite fiction that the UN provides moral leadership for the world ... a jest of course, as endless reports have revealed. And Vincente Fox? What deals were in the works under the Liberals and now, perhaps are in jeopardy ... the kind of thing those from the Centre would understand and that the network would understand or be involved in? Mr. Fox can't even keep his own citizens in their own country, Mexico's economy is so poor, though it is burgeoning as a transshipment point and a country for drugs and the drug cartels. Furthermore, Pres. Fox has encouraged his citizens to flee to the US. Greatness hardly accrues to him, though he should be of great interest to the citizens of the US and perhaps Canada, in preservation of the national interest and the rule of law, the ability to hold off the hordes trying to get in. ... Or would that circumvent some UN feel-good resolution about the poor of the world to whom we owe our homeland and its hard-earned wealth?

PM Howard is well-qualified to address the Canadian Parliament. He is a man of great courage and firm principles. He has the kind of courage that compelled him to follow his convictions concerning the security of his own Australian citizens, despite the negative clucking from the world's leftists and socialists, the talking heads and the champage socialists peopling the UN, seat of the world's (particularly Jean Chretien and Paul Martin's) "moral" leadership. Remember the refugees, the boat people who landed on Australia's coasts? The detention camp(s)? the rampages? The fires? The lips sewn together in protest at not having free reign to invade Australia at will ... as long as they mouthed the sacred word "refugee"?

Prime Minister Howard stood so tall in his response, despite the world's disapprobation that he has won four straight terms from the citizens of his own country. He is a man to be reckoned with, with the kind of leadership ability that says I stand for something more than just pandering to political correctness (gone mad), gaining monetary advantage, and buying votes from the ethnic communities and good will from non-citizens.

And then there is this Ibbitson gem:

Canada and Australia are also part of a mythical beast known as the Anglosphere: Britain and the settler nations of the United States, Canada. Australia and New Zealand.

Canada, of course, differs from the others in that it is a French speaking country, and it was Quebec opposition that largely contributed to the Chretien government's decision not to participate in the Iraq war -- the first time this country has failed to join an action supported by both the United States and Britain.

Mythical? Our Commonwealth? The Anglosphere, a mythical beast? The Anglosphere exists and it is a beacon to the world's disenfranchised. The problem for the Centre's talking heads, Ibbitson, for example, is that the US, that hotbed of democratic discussion and freedom, is part of the Anglosphere. Our biggest trading partner is not ... part of the Francophonie. Is that the problem for all those with plans? That our PM is not so concerned with the UN's good will, that he is more geared toward principle? That Quebec might not like any emphasis on the military ... on the fact that it is the fighting for democracy and to stop the world's terrorists from winning that soldiers fight and sometimes die?

Think of this young woman, Captain Goddard, who fought honourably and died for ideals beyond personal advantage. Sometimes freedom and its defense are bloody, deadly, and not adequately attained by peacekeeping, but we must be ready to defend this freedom and to stop the advance of barbarism -- which may be in Afghanistan and other areas now, but is marching toward our families. It is soldiers like Captain Goddard who answer the call to defend freedom, a part of the Anglosphere who know there are principles worth fighting for.

Canada is an "officially" bilingual country; it is not a French speaking country. Given the coercive nature of how the bilingualism policy has been applied, the oppressive nature of the social engineering--if you want to work--in forcing a minority language throughout the country, not in response to need but to promote the minority language to "make French speakers feel more at home throughout Canada", the bilingual policy has had a negative effect on this country. It has generated ill will and been most useful in maintaining one party's political hegemony. In its push to satisfy the minority ... and incidentally to give that minority extraordinary power over the high-level, highly remunerated jobs, it has almost guaranteed a split in the country between those who are advantaged by it and those who are not. It has generated such ill will that increasingly, there are Canadians who would prefer to study Mandarin or Hindi, Spanish or Arabic than be forced to study the language of their fellow citizens ... simply because they want to choose, not to be forced. That may have served the Centre and the Liberals but it has not served Canada as a nation well. It has been extremely divisive.

Concerning settler nations:

As for the Francophonie, the alternative to the Anglosphere, why do Senegal and Mali, Niger and Cote d'Ivoire, Algeria and the Cameroons speak French? Think Algeria and Vietnam and the insurrections, wars against the French colonization. Why do those countries belong to the Francophonie? Colonization and exploitation leading to language acquisition. Then there is Romania. Have you heard of any refugees fleeing to the countries of the Francophonie, the Francosphere? No, they head to the democracies of the Anglosphere.

Coercion is what people flee
......Memo to Dyane ......

If the Globe and Mail's Jeffrey Simpson had been talking of the guy with the rose in his teeth, he of the socialist (communist) bent, Simpson would have described his strength, his leadership , but Simpson was speaking of Stephen Harper so he uses the word "General"..... What a mean-spirited journalistic tour of frustration at not having Liberals in power is the following article.

Everything's coming up roses for General Harper From Wednesday's Globe and Mail, May 17, 2006

Were this a military campaign, a writer would describe the first 100 days of the Harper government as a pincer movement to squeeze the Liberals. [Note the military terms; Liberals are negative on the military.]

Stephen Harper has taken the battle to the enemy's once-strongest territory, and he is meeting success. He has routed the Liberals among francophone Quebeckers, a historic pillar of Liberal strength, and now he is attacking their other stronghold, ethnic voters.

"General"? What is behind such vitriol against a newly-elected Prime Minister?

Bell Globemedia (The Globe and Mail) and CBC hate the Conservative government; it is obvious. Wasn't there a CRTC decision or choosing not to make a decision just lately ... concerning Canadian content ........ Would that account for this? Read on.

Coercion & the CRTC

Charles Adler: A sour note on CanCon music regs May 17, 06

[....] The Canadian record business wants the private broadcasters to play four Canadian tunes for every 10 tunes you hear. Forty per cent Canadian content is the objective du jour.

When I was spinning 'em back in the '70s, it was 30%. Eight years ago the CRTC, the federal agency which plays the role of national communications referee, boosted the Canadian Content (CanCon) number to 35%. Most observers believe that it is just a matter of time before broadcasters are forced to play 50% Canadian content.

[....] This isn't about protecting our country or its art. Find me a real artist who thinks the government ought to force art galleries to ensure that half their collections are Canadian. Know anyone who wants the government to force the symphonies to play 50% Canadian music?

This issue is about one thing only. Money. Canada's music recording entitlement culture, in the name of Canadian culture, wants a fatter slice of BEAVER PIE.

May 18, 2006: Memory Lane & Questions

Memory Lane:

No wonder the Kyoto and arts activists / networks and those who had a close relationship to Liberal government(s) are unhappy ...... Like the media, they don't have the close ties to the new Conservative government and some of them comment to the media, which should reveal these close relationships, where it is relevant.

Some Background: Within the last two weeks, I have posted on some of this.

Think of the activists, providers of quotations to news media against the Conservatives' position on the arts (such as Canadian content regulations) and on Kyoto.

There is more information: via Frost Hits the Rhubarb: May 12, 2006 "Networks, Trojan Horses & Compliant Mainstream Media" which mentions John (Jack) Wiebe, ex-Liberal MP and Senator appointed by Liberal ex-PM Jean Chretien.

I had explored some revealing background on Mr. John (Jack) Wiebe's connections, since it was reported that he was dissatisfied with the Conservative government's action on the climate change, the Kyoto Protocol (signed by a Liberal government), and I made the suggestion that he is not exactly a disinterested observer. His connections and background were not made clear in the newspaper article, nor is there adequate investigation and reporting of the biases of others who speak so readily to the media.

There seemed to be cross-pollination and political connections when I check the activists and spokespeople for the arts (Remember the UNESCO protocol signed by Paul Martin Nov. 23, 05 for the arts, culture and language?) and climate change / Kyoto. It is instructive to see who belong to these activist--sometimes chosen members of--groups close to former government(s). It remains to be seen what the future will bring. However, whenever I check, the connections, the networks and the threads leading in many directions, I have found the present activism against the government may have a more political than idealistic impetus.

Another look at a list from the past, the Circumpolar Tour with ex-GG Clarkson

Consider the following and note:

* Which provinces and areas have overwhelming representation and why? How many come from the Prairies and the East, for example? How many from Quebec, Ontario, the North? Count the number from the Yukon, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador.

* How many representatives were from the areas overwhelmingly represented, and how were they chosen? (e.g. from 26,000 citizens who live in the North)

* What are the groups and networks to which these chosen representatives belong and what are their political or business connections?

There are other questions one could ask; it usually proves intriguing and informative.

Exceptional lineup of Canadians to accompany Governor General on State visits to Russia, Finland and Iceland September 10, 2003

QUEBEC CITY– Denys Arcand, Maurice Strong, Mary Simon, Peter Irniq, Roméo Dallaire, Yann Martel, Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Arthur Erickson, Édouard Lock, Bob Rae, Jane Urquhart, Measha Brueggergosman, Michael Ondaatje ...These are just some of the prominent Canadians who will showcase Canada as a modern northern nation as they accompany Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul on State visits to the Russian Federation, the Republic of Finland and the Republic of Iceland from September 23 to October 15, 2003.

[....] The official delegation accompanying the Governor General will be led by Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Stéphane Dion in Russia and [ex] Environment Minister David Anderson in Finland and Iceland, along with a multi-party delegation of parliamentarians representing both the Senate and the House of Commons. The Court Party

Party time for Courts -- Judiciary proves its power as a political force By Ezra Levant, Calgary Sun, May 15, 2006

[....] Of course the Court Party isn't an official party registered with Elections Canada. And the Court Party doesn't actually run any candidates in elections. That is one of the sources of their power: They can never be thrown out of office, since they have never been elected in the first place.

The Court Party consists of judges, lawyers, law school professors and a sympathetic media establishment, all united by the philosophy that unelected judges are the true keepers of the country, not the elected MPs who actually have to win grubby elections every four years.

The Court Party is very new, having grown up since the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights in 1982. [....]

Liberal-left prefers to bury head in sand and be politically correct

Different ways of saying "massive corruption" and "massive coverup" -- a must read

Pollaganda: The Fourth Estate and Public Opinion Mark Alexander, From Patriot No. 04-37; Published 17 September 2004 via ProudToBeCanadian.ca

Pollaganda -- Outcome-based polling; instruments designed to generate a preferential outcome, which can be used to manipulate public opinion by advancing the perception that a particular issue or candidate has majority support. Pollagandize -- To utilize instruments of pollaganda, or selective poll reporting (reporting mostly favorable polls), to advance a particular bias.

Pollaganda Cycle -- The intentional propagation of a particular bias by Leftmedia mainstream television and print outlets to manipulate public opinion by first saturating viewers with "reporting" that reflects a particular bias; second, conducting public opinion polls in concert with like-minded organizations or campaigns, which will reflect that bias; third, further proselytizing viewers by treating these poll results as "news"; and fourth, using pollaganda to induce "bandwagon psychology" (the human tendency of those who do not have a strong ideological foundation to aspire to the side perceived to be in the majority), thus driving public opinion toward the original media bias.

Liberals cooked books on gun registry: auditor Globe and Mail, 2006-05-16, Campbell Clark, posted on 05/16/2006 4:21:15 PM EDT by Clive

[....] Although all the spending was eventually recorded, the government twice broke accounting rules by pushing sizable amounts in the next year to avoid breaking the spending limits they had promised Parliament — once during the tenure of former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and another time under his successor, Paul Martin.

In the second case, as Mr. Martin's government was preparing to call an election in early 2004, officials at the Canadian Firearms Centre warned they were going to exceed their authorized spending, and needed Parliament to authorize more money.

But after senior government officials briefed Liberal ministers — Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan was responsible for the registry at the time — the government decided not to ask Parliament for more money, but instead asked accountants and lawyers to find a way to shift $21.8-million in costs to the next fiscal year. [....]

Search: A $39-million "error" made during Mr. Chrétien's tenure , then-justice minister Martin Cauchon , made that promise after MPs balked at approving more money for the registry , no records of why the Justice Department made such a large error , Ms. McLellan, also deputy prime minister , Reg Alcock was Treasury Board President , government refused to waive solicitor-client privilege

Are Liberals stuck on "obfuscation"? Or "lie"? -- Anne McLellan

Afghan mission backstabbers WallysWorld, 5/17/2006

As for the Liberals, .... They sent our troops to Afghanistan while in government and now might pull their support only because they no longer form the government. On top of this, they have an interim leader in Graham who was useless as Foreign Minister and Defense Minister.

Afghanistan is a UN-sanctioned operation. The leftists love the UN, but seem to want to abandon the people of Afghanistan to the Taliban. All because it was the US who kicked out the Taliban to begin with.

Liberals Lied-Says EX Police Chief article by Megan Gillis, Ottawa Sun, posted by sensaregreat, May 17, 06

Ottawa's former top cop says he supported the gun registry because he didn't know the Liberals were lying to him.

"I was assured by government -- it's on budget," said Brian Ford, who publicly supported the registry as chairman of a Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police committee.

"They were lying. It bothers me. I was telling people what I believed to be the truth." [. . . . ]

Comment: "A gun registry of any kind will not stop violent people from using guns, knives, rope, bare hands, butter knives, forks, tire irons, fists etc etc etc to kill people.

Brian Ford ... forgot to mention that women also use guns to kill people."

Freedom's cry is answered with bullets in Uzbekistan -- A year after the Andijan massacre, dictator's grip tighter than ever, GRAEME SMITH finds Globe and Mail, May 13, 06

Hundreds of Uzbeks have fled into nearby Kyrgyzstan and were allowed to settle in safe countries, including Canada. 43 have come to Canada already.

MOSCOW -- As protesters around the world gather to mark today's anniversary of the Andijan massacre, they face an uncomfortable reality: They're losing the fight for freedom in Uzbekistan.

Islam Karimov, the autocrat who has ruled the former Soviet republic since 1989, sent troops to quell a civilian uprising in the city of Andijan on May 13, 2005. The soldiers fired into the crowd, killing hundreds of people, and then hunted the survivors as they tried to run away.

In the aftermath of the massacre, opposition leaders talked about using the incident to spark a rebellion against Mr. Karimov. But one year later, Uzbekistan's ruler has only tightened his grip.

Hundreds of people have been arrested on suspicion of helping the opposition, and nearly every international media outlet and non-government organization has been shut down. Many news websites are blocked from the local Internet. Mr. Karimov has outlawed gatherings of more than 10 people, reorganized his security forces, and re-landscaped sections of Tashkent to fortify the capital against mass revolt. [....]

Forbes: Castro - One of World's Richest Rulers posted by SeanMcElroy, 5/16/2006

This month's Forbes magazine places Castro in #7 place out of 10 world leaders with "lofty positions and vast fortunes."

The magazine says Castro's personal wealth is around $900 million, nearly double that of the $500 million of Queen Elizabeth II and just under Prince Albert II of Monaco's estimated $1 billion.

The article, "Fortunes Of Kings, Queens And Dictators" also referred to rumours of Castro having "large stashes in Swiss bank accounts."
