So you hate classical music? Try Opera without words

Search: "Listen to Samples" and select "Listen to all" -- light and lively

Down from that, there are other samples listed (Bizet, Puccini, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven and Verdi, for example) to which you may listen. Sometimes, music is so insistent that it interferes with my thinking, but these are perfect while I'm doing something else. I hope someone else will enjoy them.

I'd better stop or I'll be posting another recipe . . . or a list of good wines . . . Well, that amounts to passable plonk in my world so you'll be relieved if I omit that.

May you have a great weekend.

David Ahenakew found guilty of hate crime

Former First Nations leader David Ahenakew lashed out at the Jewish community, the courts and the media after being found guilty of promoting hate.

Provincial court Judge Marty Irwin handed down his ruling in a Saskatoon courtroom filled with Ahenakew's supporters and members of the Jewish community, including some Holocaust survivors.

Ahenakew, 71, was spared jail and instead was fined $1,000 for his crime. The Crown had asked for a fine of $2,000.

This might sound like a good decision to those he maligned and hurt, but I believe it is the thin edge of the wedge to end speaking out and/or telling uncomfortable truths in this country. Consider the two pastors punished for reading from the Koran in Australia. Who is going to decide what is offensive?

To whose benefit would it be to curb free speech -- for example, among bloggers?

Suppose that, in the face of something dangerous, you are trying to warn and you are speaking truth
--not the assinine comments made by Ahenakew--but what if you cross one of the currently politically favoured groups? Government lackeys who don't want truth to be revealed? Appointees who have changed your world and you want to speak out about it, for the good of Canadians? . . . Someone doesn't like what you say. Who is going to protect your right to free speech when truth should come out? My right?

Is there any longer free speech if someone . . . anyone . . . might be offended? I am not talking about vicious lies; I am talking about truth . . . offensive to someone truth.

Krauthammer -- worth reading -- very good via Newsbeat1 or CCD (I forget; sorry.)

Charles Krauthammer is a nationally syndicated columnist for the Washington Post and an essayist for Time. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1987, and in 2003 was a recipient of the Bradley Prize. [London Terrorism:] British "Covenant of Security" with Islamists Ends Daniel Pipes, New York Sun, July 8, 2005

Covenant of security? What is that? In an August 2004 story in the New Statesman, "Why terrorists love Britain," Jamie Campbell cited the author of Inside Al Qaeda, Mohamed Sifaoui, as saying, "it has long been recognized by the British Islamists, by the British government and by UK intelligence agencies, that as long as Britain guarantees a degree of freedom to the likes of Hassan Butt [an overtly pro-terrorist Islamist], the terrorist strikes will continue to be planned within the borders of the UK but will not occur here." [. . . . ]

It means that Muslims can no longer be considered to have sanctity and security here, therefore they should consider leaving this country and going back to their homelands. Otherwise they are under siege and obviously we do not want to see that we are living under siege.

Search: Dar ul-Harb , the kuffar

Doesn't Canada have one of those, a "Covenant of security", too? Our government just hasn't admitted it -- or else why the desperation to appear so anti-American and to be seen not to support the US War on Terror? It would assure the jihadis that they have nothing to fear from Canada . . . so we'll be okay -- just as was London.

The barbarians come to London

Actually, they have been there for years.
Think of the Islamic extremists, who openly preached their message of death to Blair and all infidels. Recently, I wrote about an Islamic mob in Hyde Park--most of them masked--who spewed their hatred for democracy and all things 'infidel'. The London Bobbies simply stood there doing nothing, although making death threats against Blair and wearing a mask in public are both crimes. This display of impotence in the face of barbarism only encourages it. How ironic that Sasha Trudeau and those of his leftist ilk have rallied around a terrorist suspect here. Along with this, we have the various Canadian Islamic groups bleating about how racist CSIS is in their attempts to curb domestic terrorism. This London attack was so co-ordinated it suggests 'sleeper cells'. Meanwhile Canadians have been lulled into the belief that we are immune to such an attack. Well, that is what the Spanish and French thought, until it happened.

This attack has al-Queda written all over it. The London bombings occurred within a minute of the time of the Sept. 11 massacre. The opening of the G-8 meeting obviously was part of the timing. Just as the World Trade Center was a target--versus a purely American symbol like the Empire State building--so this attack occurs when the G-8 is talking about alleviating poverty in Africa. Many of the states slated for debt relief are Islamic. It is this perverse logic that makes it clear that al-Queda has a modus operandi that is somewhat counter-productive. It is a Shakespearean "motiveless malignancy" in many respects.

If they think that the English will cave in to their demands, as the Spanish did, I think that they are sadly mistaken. One fallout from this will be "Red" Ken Livingstone's chances of re-election as London mayor (Scroll down for other interpretations on Red Ken from Monte Solberg and Michelle Malkin). Livingstone, a longtime lefty, recently feted an Islamic extremist from Saudi Arabia. This example of political correctness run amok will come back to haunt him. I would like to think that our leaders will have the resolve to bar Islamic "refugees" who step off planes with no (or fake) identification. However, our leaders are so paralyzed by their reliance on the immigrant vote that whatever action is taken will be weak. The statement "I have seen the enemy, and it is us" rings true here.

The insane terrorist attacks in London has its echoes in Iraq

Numerous Londoners expressed bewilderment about the reasons for the bombings. Didn't they sacrifice British soldiers to liberate Iraq from Saddam Hussain's monstrous regime? They try to apply some logic for the wanton slaughter of British civilians. That is their mistake. Western logic cannot suffice to explain the minds of terrorists. There is a twisted pathology that operates below logic when the fanatics strike. It is born of a rigid theology that admits no contradictions of their ideology and is immune from modernization or amelioration. Isolated from any religious reformation or modern philosophy, their minds turn inward. The madrassahs, with their emphasis on blind obedience to some imam's interpretation which leads back to the sword of Mohammed, is fertile ground for turning out automatons. Add to that a stifling societal background, where the natural sexual urges are sublimated into violent thoughts and blaming earthly women, and you have men who will kill indiscriminately--especially if there is the sexual prize of feminine purity in the form of 72 virgins at the end of their suicidal actions.

The irony of Sunnis killing Shi'ites, and vice versa, to gain this glorious Islamic prize never seems to enter their minds. We Christians had the same delusions about righteousness when Catholics and Protestants slaughtered each other during the 17th century. Now we shudder at such evil madness committed by our ancestors. No such qualms seem to exist in the Islamic world. Theirs is a Hobbesian world of all against all. Every Islamic sect reviles the other.

Iraq is a classic case of this mutual hatred in action. The Baathist Sunnis, along with their foreign jihadi allies, consider the mass murder of Shi'ites--even in mosques--to be fair game. Despite the fact that Saddam would have plunged into Saudi Arabia and ruthlessly subjugated them, Saudi imams preach that youths should now support these same Baathists by becoming jihadis.

Similarly, Sunni Syrians march off to martyrdom to advance their branch. They appear to have forgotten that their former Baathist leader, Hafez Assad wiped out 25,000 of them in Ham'a during 1982, Besides running a mainly secular regime, the Assads are Ala'wites, a despised minority sect. You would think revenge at home would be a worthy cause for them. Still, no matter, the Crusader infidels and their heretical Shi'ite servants must be the target. For the Iraqi Sunnis it wasn't enough that Saddam forced them into an eight year war with Iran, at the cost of a million lives; now they want to provoke a civil war with their Shi'ite brethern. This, despite the fact that the Shi'ites vastly outnumber them and have Iran as their backup ally. The Kurdish Peshmerga army would be happy also to chop them to pieces. By some miracle, should the Sunnis emerge victorious, the various foreign jihadis would then have to battle it out with the Baathists for control, Baathists who have military experience and could count on the Syrians for support. A future of endless bloodbaths would be the outcome. The Western infidels, who would retreat until the dust settled, would conquer the exhausted remnants.

Now take that bizarre pathology operating in Iraq and apply it to the terrorist attacks on England. Unlike the Spanish, there will be no desire to appease the terrorists by a withdrawal from Iraq. Because the jihadi's knowledge of world history is so deficient, they don't understand the lesson of the Nazi's blitz of London. However, they will soon find out that it will only harden the English resolve to smash them like cockroaches. Even the treacherous Saudi government will help them do it, as they now are reaping the whirlwind they created. The fundamentalists will spiral ever downward in their dance of death.

If you want to see how far they can descend into madness, remember the Islamic Army of Salvation in Algeria? After murdering tens of thousands of their countrymen, the various fundamentalist factions turned on each other. The rebellion abated only after their main leader decreed that "all" Algerians might have to be killed to arrive at the proper state of Islamic purity. This bottomless well of craziness was too much even for the fanatics.

London terror and Canadian apologists

Even before the total carnage of the bombings was known, there was Mohamed Elmasry's fantasy outrage A Muslim response to London? They were still counting the dead and the maimed in the hospitals of London on Thursday at 11:46 a.m. EST when Dr. Mohamed Elmasry, of Waterloo, Ont., head of the Canadian Islamic Congress, seized the chance to import this issue into Canadian ethnic politics and once more assert the right of Canadian Muslims not to be blamed for anything, ever.

Elmasry, the head of the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC), was crying wolf about some perceived backlash against Canadian Muslims. It would be far more fitting for him to urge his fellowers to rigorously help apprehend the extremists in the Islamic fold. Every time the authorities round up suspected al-Queda members here, his group cries "racism". The hoary ghost of racial profiling is raised if young Muslims are given special attention at airports. It is as though Swedish grandmothers should be given extra attention, as well. Well, the major terrorist attacks around the world all have one commonality, radical Islam. I still remember that after 9/11, when the evidence was irrefutable that the perpetrators were all Muslims, Canada's imans refused to accept it. They were probably astute enough not to mouth the nonsense that Mossad was behind it, as much of the Islamic world professed. The Muslim American Society is no better. They are asking Americans to suspend belief and not associate this latest outrage with Islam at all.

But you don't have to be a Muslim leader to be a useful fool. You might just be a leftist ideologue like Sasha Trudeau or Naomi Klein. These two, along with their fellow travellers, have been trying to get a suspected al-Queda member in Canada freed. The Americans were pressured into releasing British Muslims from Gitmo, and now one of them is a "person of interest" in the London bombings. The loony left faction seem to have a death wish. Rather than wanting to see our superior civilization advance, they want to see it hobbled, if not destroyed. The irony is that if the Islamic fundamentalists ever won, these Canadian and US leftists would be the first to go before the firing squads . . . or beheaded in the public square, to make a point about their godless beliefs.

As communism has shown, useful fools are useful only until power is consolidated; then it's off to the gulags. But Sasha is only following in daddy's footsteps, I suppose. In his day Pierre Trudeau was a great supporter of Mao and Fidel, two of the world's great tyrants; then there is Trudeau's support for the elder statesman of Africa and father of Tanzania's agricultural collectivization, Julius Nyerere, whose socialist ideas destroyed the agriculture of the country. Useful fools beget useful fools.

Daimnation: Book Review -- of David Horowitz: Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left

Tens of thousands of Americans demonstrated against the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and it would be unfair to dismiss all of them as knee-jerk radicals who hate their country. . . . . most of America's other (seemingly interchangeable) "antiwar" groups are similarly infested with Marxists, Maoists and "anarchists" at their highest levels. Even "Win Without War", an organization founded to put a more moderate face on the "peace" movement, has many of the same old moonbats on its board of directors.

David Horowitz: Radical Son A Generational Odyssey -- ISBN: 0684840057 -- snippets from two reviews

radical leftism is no more friendly to a Jew than radical rightism yet Horowitz fails to show the link between ignorant right wing racism and concealed left wing racism. . . .

Wake Up Call -- review by a customer

As he points out, among Islamic Fundamentalists coexistence is not an option. They want to kill Christians, Jews, and moderate Muslims. Through his book, he demonstrates that diplomacy is not an option with a group of people who value death over life. If you want corroborating evidence for his many arguments read the Koran. The true Muslim religion advocates violence, martyrdom, destruction of all sources of temptation, and an extreme desperation for seventh century religion.

A poll on the CNEWS site asks "Should Canada boost the amount it spends on foreign aid?" and the answer? 72% at this point say NO!

There's a democratic deficit Paul. Have you noticed? Have you checked with the great unwashed--of which I am a member--and what we want?

Did you hear about the Biggest Pumpkin in the Middle East?

The G8 gave the Palestinians $3-BILLION -- "to stabilize" . . . what? More guns, more suicide bombings, more child abuse, more death -- more life as usual . . . and, we musn't forget, more Mercedes Benzes. Remember the Israeli tanks rolling over several of Arafat's Mercedes, in an area surrounded by the usual Palestinian slums?

Does the G8 accomplish much besides allocating other people's money to those who have not earned it by the sweat of their brow? Do the Palestinians have to forego their obsession with killing in order to receive other people's money? Of course not!

Do the Palestinians ever want to be known for anything beyond an obsession with death -- Jewish deaths?

Name something admirable associated with the Palestinians. A concern for the world's needy . . . other than themselves? An education system producing well-rounded knowledgeable graduates with something on their minds besides committing jihad for Allah and those ever-dangled virgins? A successful business spreading worldwide? A fine humanitarian effort? A medical breakthrough? An engineering advance. . . well, would we not settle for hearing of other people's money providing something as mundane as sewage or waste disposal? A photo of the biggest pumpkin grown in the Middle East?

Suggestion: Does the Muslim world want to be known mainly for terrorism and its obsession with jihad, prelude to houris and "favours"?

Would someone please help the "lap dancers" chafing at the bit to enter Canada via ex-Min. Sgro and Min. Volpe's department? They could be re-routed to a gig in the Middle East. Perhaps they could do the world a great service by helping these men to sublimate or get over . . . whatever their problem is.

Last year, having stepped aside so that the younger, more ambitious Ruby Dhalla could run for the Liberals in his Toronto-area riding, former Liberal MP Sarkis Assadourian was named the Prime Minister's "Special Advisor on Near Eastern and South Caucasus Affairs." The root cause of terrorism is a hate filled ideology that believes in the virtual elimination of all our liberties in favour of an Islamic theocracy. It believes in the murder of those who don't subscribe to their perverse beliefs.
Its pretty simple, though it could never be too simple for those who think that blind acceptance of every culture and sect will help us avoid conflict.

Actually conflict and bloody violence is the only responsible reply to a culture that is bent on the murder our people.

In the face of utter evil allowed to enter and proliferate in the West

When complete evil is allowed to enter our homelands, when this evil strikes time and again in the West, and we still do not end its possibility of entrance, there is nothing to do today beyond watching and listening to the reports, then finding solace in music. The violin, the cello, the harp -- all remind me of the highly developed civilization and the civilizing aspects of, among other things, the literature, art and music the West has encouraged -- only to become too sensitive, too civilized for its own good. It has allowed the Islamist trojan horse to enter under the umbrella of a tolerant multiculturalism.

These murderous thugs are mindless evil aided and abetted by Western tolerance, a tolerance which has gone far beyond the bounds of reason. I shall not post anything more for a bit. I simply want revenge for this mindless assault on tolerant Western civilization.

To the citizens of the UK facing this barbarity, my sympathy and my hope that you will turn with righteous anger and REVENGE upon these hate-filled barbarians. It is time for action, not sweet reason with people too hate-filled, too ignorant, too held in thrall to a barbarous set of beliefs for civilized society. It is also time to rid civilized society of all those who, by their silence, aid and abet them. NJC

I realize that reports saying the barbarity was perpetrated by Al Qaeda in Europe are unconfirmed. My guess is Islamist crazies from what I have read. If I am wrong, I still believe we have been fools in the West. It is only a matter of time.

He was a master of political image making and control, creating a government paid team of media personnel. They filmed and wrote about numerous government projects and the Premier in a favourable light that were distributed to the various media outlets. Often, the same ribbon-cutting ceremony and the like, would be seen several times in shots taken from different angles with a variety of subtext.

During his lengthy term in office he was criticised for having never dealt with the power of the Irving Family industrial interests that dominate the Province's economy and control three of the Province's four major newspapers.

Canada's Ambassador Declares War on Fox News -- says Fox "spreads disinformation" July 3, 2005, NewsMax

"The ambassador [Frank McKenna] said he has sent out 6,000 pieces of literature to Canadians in his battle with Fox, and plans to mail to some 100,000 Canadians in the weeks ahead."

If Frank McKenna wants truth disseminated, perhaps he could publicize some of the reports from Parliamentary committees, along with selected excerpts from Hansard. But he is in the running for Paul Martin's position -- FM for PM, I think, and this is his method.

Frank intends to counter information that conflicts with the Toronto Star / CBC Liberal Propaganda Organ views by diverting attention from some of the ways democracy has been subverted, along with security and much else in Liberal Canada. Frank will save us all from Fox; we might hear something other than the government version of life in this best of all possible worlds.

He was so successful using his 68 or more communications people to spread his government's message that he was doing a masterful job while Premier of NB. One must not forget his success . . . at creating high end call center jobs in NB.

McKenna did, however, cultivate some powerful contacts for himself which have been most helpful in his rise.

What does McKenna think of an English Al Jazeera? Or is there no danger of too much balance in the coverage? It is so much easier to deal with the media one can control, isn't it?

Al-Jazeera set to launch English channel July 5, 05, CP

But Canadians wanting access to Al-Jazeera International will have to wait until Canada's broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-telecommunications Television Commission, gives the green light for the country's satellite providers to carry it.

"They would have to re-apply to the CRTC just like they did the first time," said Kristina Babulic, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association. [. . . . ]

Does this mean Canadians would be able to view the beheadings and other jihadi activities in English? How progressive! Time to man the barricades for civilization.

Prime Minister Sasha Trudeau? by Judi McLeod, July 1, 2005

While embedded in Baghdad, Trudeau compiled a personal war diary. His Bagdad experience will be the subject of the documentary W-FIVE Presents: The Fence, scheduled to air September 18 on CTV.

Being soft on terrorists and anti-American are leading attributes for Canadian prime ministers.

Prime Minister Alexendre (Sasha) Trudeau is coming our way down the Liberal pike and may someday return Liberal-obsessed Canada to the throwback of "Trudeamania". [. . . . ]

Bring on the charisma! Even media-instigated charisma. Get the media all stirred up! Another Trudeau! Spare us!

Do you ever find it strange how easily people are led to interest in celebrities and the children of . . . ? If ever there were an argument for throwing out the television and getting together with like-minded parents to home school, this media-inspired, public love fest with celebrities is it. How do parents cope with such pervasive influences? The best that I know are always on guard; they parent in the old-fashioned sense of the word. The father's word is law, in general, and he is supported by his wife (not partner, note) because they have talked and agreed on being in control of their chldren which includes standing together sometimes, even when they differ.

They support each other in the children's upbringing. I remember once trying to play one against the other to go to a film. I knew which one would be more likely to say yes to me . . . but he supported my mother. I felt betrayed by this dearest of fathers. Now, I realize that they probably often had to do that to present a united front for the greater good of the family unit . . . and they were right.

But in Canada, strong families are not supported while centers of indoctrination are. That is how you gerrymander to bring about the results you want in order to stay in power. Give me a child until he is well-indoctrinated, and I'll give you a compliant citizen-subject who can be swayed by government controlled media to keep voting for the same, believing that things will get better. Bah!

This is really scary.

Now, in addition to invoking closure on C-38 in the House of Commons, the Liberals are forcing aside democratic debate in the Senate by invoking closure again. Never let it be said that PM and claque are democratic; they are totally domineering and controlling -- to the detriment of the people and their governing institutions. They ram down our throats legislation about which any reasonable people might differ. Never let the people have their say in the face of PM needing to please a voting block to garner votes. They are not succeeding so well on the contribution of $$$ front, however; the Conservatives are away ahead of the Liberals in personal donations to the party. Is it possible? People put their money where their hopes are? Perhaps not as cowed as MSM would have us believe?

Political fiction -- How much longer before Bible is declared hate literature? Link Byfield, Calgary Sun, July 1, 2005

[. . . . ] Here was a serious change to a fundamental social institution which most people did not want, do not support, and probably never will. Yet it passed because the federal executive -- the cabinets and senior bureaucrats of Jean Chretien and Paul Martin -- wanted it passed.

They wanted it passed because they are power-crazed and have taken upon themselves the duty of reshaping Canadian society to their own image and values.

To this end, they manipulate the courts, by funding court challenges to Canadian laws and then deliberately losing, and by appointing judges who will do what they want.

18 nabbed in human-smuggling scheme Jerry Seper, Washington Times, July 3, 05

An affidavit in the case said ringleaders Young Joon Jung and Ho Kyung Kim oversaw efforts to recruit prospective prostitutes in South Korea and then arranged for them to be brought to the United States. Some of the women were smuggled into the country across the Mexican and Canadian borders, it said.

The affidavit said the women paid up to $16,000 each to be smuggled into the country. Once they arrived, it said the women were expected to work as prostitutes, with a portion of their earnings going to repay their smuggling debts.

Bilingualism 'far from widely endorsed' Bruce Cheadle, July 3, 05.

Check Paul Palango's book, The Last Guardians, which touches on how bilingualism has affected the RCMP (e.g. chapter 12, page 235).

Palango covers the Glassco Commission's influence, the ever-present consideration of how Quebec will take every move and the need to consider every step in that light, the decision to get rid of the Comptroller General leaving the opportunity for a Trudeau and his successors to spend Canada into higher and higher debt, for a Trudeau to realize his vision for Quebec, to expand the idea of bilingual service, to turn a guardian institution into a business-oriented institution (reference Jane Jacobs' work) by which the feds make money from the provinces by selling the services of the RCMP, the proceeds of which go into general revenue not to the RCMP . . . well, read it. I was agreeably surprised at Palango's attempt to provide background of a philosophical nature which ended with the present-day problems of the RCMP.

Norman Inkster is featured as the one who was responsible for the movement of the head of the force into what amounts to a ministerial position--Deputy Minister?--in the government. It may have been inadvertent, but the results are important and have affected the force's independence from political considerations. Read it and decide for yourself.

Before getting all weepy-eyed over the Live 8 stunt, I'd advise everyone to read Peter Goodspeed's probing series on Africa in the National Post. Few will be enthralled with the Live 8 circuses after that.

Goodspeed points that out over the past several decades, the western industrial democracies have poured $500 billion in foreign aid into Africa. Totalled with loans, which are frequently written off, the sum is a staggering $1 trillion U.S.

Good money wasted? Unless G8 has a say, they'll pour good money after bad, writes Bob MacDonald July 3, 05

For instance, the African Union has estimated corruption costs African countries $148 billion a year -- equal to half of that $300 billion debt.

Why forgive the debt when such massive amounts are being stolen? Hell, do they think this is Canada where the Liberal regime has ripped off $250 million of Canadian taxpayers' money in the AdScam scandal and still leads in the public opinion polls? [. . . . ]

Simple lyrics won't end global poverty The Gazette, July 2, 05

[. . . . ] We're a rich people, by global standards, and able to be generous.

But does that mean we must be gullible? Foreign aid has been a swamp of corruption for decades, with countless billions flowing to consultants, bureaucrats and the Swiss bank accounts of tinpot tyrants. Recipient states also borrow money abroad, spend it on weaponry or palaces or waste, and then clamour for their debts to be cancelled.
(Richer countries just tore up some $40 billion of such debt.) [. . . . ]

What western countries really need to do to fight global poverty, then, is to open their trade, in a reasoned way, to those countries where responsible governance and free institutions will permit people to take advantage of these new opportunities. [. . . . ]

Transparency International: Recommendations Chapter 4 -- PDF

Governments bear the greatest responsibility for ensuring the honest and transparent management of public funds. Governments must put in place rules on public contracting that meet minimum international standards. Transparency International’s Minimum Standards for Public Contracting (see page 4) provide a global baseline.

Putting in place the right rules is not enough, however, given the widespread tolerance of corruption within the construction sector . . . . A few of these initiatives, such as Transparency International’s Integrity Pact and the effort by leaders of some of the world’s largest construction companies to agree on corporate anti-corruption principles, were outlined in Chapter 1 (see pages 9–27).

None of these actions by itself will change the situation. Both public and private actors, and the banks and ECAs that finance projects, need to work together to eliminate corruption. . . . . an overlap between the two spheres: a public contract is unlikely to be executed by the winning company exclusively, but rather by a web of subcontractors with potential for corruption at each private-to-private subcontracting level.

Many of the recommendations are not exclusive to the construction sector, but there are features of the sector, such as its size, complexity and importance to broader service provision, that render them all the more urgent.

1. Actions for clients (public and private sector) (The term ‘client’ means the developer or owner of a project, and includes government departments and agencies in the case of public works). [. . . . ]

The failure of Altruism -- Aid to Africa Peter Goodspeed, July 2, 05

[. . . . ] But, while Live Aid's songs raised more than US$100-million for famine victims in Ethiopia and Sudan, they did almost nothing to alleviate Africa's steady descent into disaster.

Two decades on, Africa remains a cursed continent, wracked with famine, malnutrition, high infant mortality, disease, mismanagement, corruption and civil war. Awash in refugees, it still lacks leadership. Declining economic growth, crime and unemployment are widespread.

[. . . . ] The activists have joined a Commission on Africa, set up by Mr. Blair to draw up recommendations for the G8, to demand an immediate doubling of foreign aid to Africa. The commission called for increasing foreign aid to US$50-billion a year by 2010, US$25-billion a year by 2015.

Just as a point of interest, the "activists" are unelected and our parliamentary representatives are expected to make hard decisions in our interests -- even saying "No! No more failed aid money to be funnelled into arms and dictators' accounts in Switzerland."

Who are these "activists"? To whom are they responsible? Government funded NGO's? Who funds them? How do they support their travels to every venue where they are able to protest? Who or what is behind them?

Why don't they volunteer to go to Africa to actually see whether throwing more money at problems helps?

Do they not read?

Where do Canada's PM and assorted politicians get off promising other people's money to a cause which, if they told the truth, would reveal that present measures are NOT working. Use Canadians' money for Canadians . . . until Canadians have a chance to sort out what actually works -- instead of our being presented with pure bafflegab, BS and buying of votes from identifiable voting blocks--yes, courting African immigrants and the francophonie which is involved in various projects in Africa. Methinks our PM has no real common sense core, just a mish mash of priorities, huffing and puffing and hot air, all of which signifies nothing except more of the same . . . It doesn't work, PM! Step aside, and let others with more principles and common sense dispense Canadians hard-earned money.

Money better spent at home, 59% say Allan Woods, July 2, 05

PM is hardly the one to address the problem of governance--think about it--that the Canadian Taxpayers' Williamson points out.

The Prime Minister said he is committed to meeting the target, but must first figure out if the country can afford it. He suggested that the world's problems, including poverty, violence and environmental degradation, have been escalating because leaders have given in to "short-term political pressure" with no intention of honouring long-term commitments.

"I'm not going to do that," he said. "I'm not going to do that because there's an election coming. I'm not going to do that under any circumstances." This week, the Canadian Taxpayers' Federation panned the Live 8 concerts and the push from musicians such as Sir Bob and U2's Bono to have leaders commit more funds to Africa. Director John Williamson argued that instead of throwing money at the problem, Western leaders should first ensure "governance reforms" in those countries to make sure the aid money will be well spent.

He's going to do it if it garners something he wants. . . based on experience after PM makes promises. By the way, what about the tsunami aid $$$, PM? Or is it considered impolite to mention that . . . now that another priority has come up?

Bruce Garvey: The best suggestion for Paul Martin on Aid to Africa

Live 8 concerts mean well, but ... Bruce Garvey, National Post, July

[. . . . ] The trouble is that I've been to Africa. To the lawless squalor of Black Hawk Down Mogadishu; to the refugee camps where skin-and-bone Somalian babies die before your very eyes; to fever-ridden Douala on the steamy West Coast where the slave ships used to load; to the once-beautiful urban blight of Nairobi and Harare and South Africa's AIDS-ravaged townships.

Precious few of the almost exclusively white cottage-country crowd that descended on Barrie knew the reality of Africa even as they mouthed the little white lie that they came for "the cause" rather than the music.

[. . . . ] After all, who could endorse the state of Africa, other than a handful of Swiss bank account dictators?

[. . . . ] Unfortunately, the most Paul Martin could do for Africa right now is to shift the family shipping fleet's low-tax registration from Barbados to Liberia. [. . . . ]

The dying continent: Africa's biggest killer -- preventable disease -- is also the one that is easiest to treat Peter Goodspeed, July 5, 05, National Post, A11

[. . . . ] In Botswana, frequently touted as one of the most successful countries in Africa, the average age has already been reduced to 27 years by HIV/AIDS. A stunning 35.6% of its population is infected with HIV/AIDS.

[. . . . ] According to the advocacy group Physicians for Human Rights, Africa houses a mere 1.3% of the world's health workers. But those doctors and nurses struggle to care for people suffering from 25% of the world's disease.

By now after 20+ years, the information on AIDS is well-known except to those who don't want to know. When are Africa's leaders who travel the world and must have some degree of knowledge about it going to truthfully publicize how AIDS is contracted? And that it is preventable by the simplest of means?

Troop Strength from the era of Trudeau to Martin -- downhill all the way

Military stretched too thin. How thin? Check the table: "Canadian Forces since World War II" -- There were approximately 107,467 when Trudeau came to the PM's office, and currently, is at 57,863 (incl. 13,473 classified as 'other') which means, there are 44,390 troops, I assume.

Quite successful was the Trudeau who tooled around Montreal on a motorcycle during World War 2 wearing a Nazi helmet. He did not care for the military -- nor did his successors, it seems. Now, the military has neither adequate manpower nor equipment for protecting out Northern boundary and the resources and people within. As they wished, one can only assume.

Military Expenditure has dropped from 3.8% of GDP to 1.1% of GDP during the same period. Trudeau achieved success finally -- a decimated military -- though some abilities have been emphasized. I'll leave you to figure that one out for yourself.

Would someone find out the number of government spin doctors in place, along with how many are employed by the Liberal Propaganda Organ / CBC -- the ones who spout Librano$ views on almost everything, usually without positive, supportive pieces about the military, policing, and anything having to do with Christians?

I'll bet the numbers would shock. Think of have-not NB with 68-72 spin doctors employed by PM in the wings, Frank McKenna and his government to give the proper spin; scroll down for more on McKenna.

Divorce law on trial

This article concerns how long responsiblities endure. After activist court decisions and pro-feminist justices, where does the law stand on one partner's responsibilities, once that marriage contract is declared finished?

Another suggestion: It is important for those contemplating divorce to consider their intentions are vis a vis a legacy to their children from that marriage -- especially after remarriage and subsequent death. I read too often--even know a few cases--where the second partner's influence is such that the children of the first marriage lose their inheritance to the children of the second partner, who may not even be blood relatives. Why this happens is as varied as male-female relationships, but disinheritance through a second marriage is prevalent enough that it should be a consideration. It leaves the children so omitted from consideration with negative memories of the parent who seemed to forget about them. It is not the amount; it is that they came so far down the list in importance as to be disinherited after a second marriage. No child wants to feel that he/she meant so little to a parent -- and finding out after the parent's death increases the bitterness.

Information on the Canadian Space Station Program, and RADARSAT-1 and RADARSAT-2 Major Crown Projects is reported on the CSA Web site at the following address: [RADARSAT-1 and RADARSAT-2 Major Crown Projects ]

[. . . . ] 3.2 Partnership International co-operation is critical to the implementation of the Canadian Space Program. Canada co-operates with a number of international partners and has ties to various space agencies. Although the United States (U.S.) National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) remain Canada's main international partners, we are increasingly developing relationships with other foreign space organisations. To learn more about Canada's international partners, go to: [Canada's international partners]

[. . . . ] SECTION: 4 Strategic Context

Over the planning horizon of this Departmental Performance Report (DPR), the CSA delivered the Canadian Space Program in the context of a very challenging international and national space sector.

4.1 International Environment

[. . . . ] Space activities are global in scope and this characteristic favours co-operation between nations seeking common goals. Canada must therefore possess a space infrastructure to not only meet its specific national needs, but to also play a tangible and visible role in responding to the issues that interest the international community. [. . . . ]

Still, several international opportunities remain and Canada is regarded as a non-threatening and reliable partner that possesses unique technical and scientific capabilities, and that can meaningfully contribute to the initiatives of foreign space agencies. In particular, emerging space-faring countries in Asia and South America offer high potential for future co-operation. These markets, while limited in the short-term, are likely to be subject to intense competition in the long-term. Consequently, Canada maintained its efforts to establish a foothold in these emerging markets. Therefore it was of paramount importance for the CSA to continue to work with its stakeholders to ensure that both our research community and industry remain active and competitive vis-à-vis world standards and markets.

4.2 National Environment

The Canadian Space Agency recognises that the best means of turning scientific and technological advancements into innovative products and services is through industry.

[. . . . ] In addition to being able to respond directly to the needs of Canadians without constraint, this industrial capability should be of sufficient size and quality to make Canada an attractive partner for nations with whom it wishes to co-operate in order to meet common objectives. Given that the Canadian market is relatively small, it is critical that industry be able to leverage foreign investments and generate export sales. Capitalizing on export revenue depends on industry's ability to commercialise highly competitive products and services, as well as the Government of Canada's ability to establish open trade regulations with its closest international partners.

[. . . . ] To foster growth of the space industry during strenuous economic conditions, the CSA adjusted its priorities in order to accelerate the development of telecommunication in research and development (R&D) initiatives . . . . the Canadian Space Program, which is centred on: . . . . and the commercialisation of these products and services by Canadian industry, particularly in foreign markets.

Sharia, Indiscriminate Tolerance, Muslims--AIDS & Aid

Sharia law by stealth

What is car-wreck fascinating here is Judge Michael Higgins' conclusion that simply pointing out what the Koran says now constitutes outlawed speech in Victoria. During court proceedings, when Mr. Scot began to read verses from the Koran that denigrate women, a lawyer for the Islamic Council of Victoria, the plaintiff, cut him off, explaining that reading such verses aloud is itself an act of vilification. "How," wondered Mr. Scot, can it be vilifying to Muslims in the room when I am just reading from the Koran?"

How, indeed. As Robert Spencer has pointed out, at another point in the trial, the Australian judge was affronted that Mr. Scot had said that "the Koran promotes violence, killing and looting." Mr. Spencer writes: "In light of Koranic passages such as 9:5, 2:191, 9:29, 47:4, 5:33 and many others, this cannot seriously be a matter of dispute. [. . . . ]

[. . . . ] In outlawing criticism of Islam -- which, so far, is the effect of the law -- Victoria has not only codified a peculiarly strong resistance to reality, but it has also adopted the practice of sharia-ruled states. This makes for a startling spectacle of free people placing a muzzle on speech, a limit on faith and a damper on inquiry.

It sounds like the perfect place for CAIR members like Mohammed Elmasry. Luckily, there are writers like Salim Mansur in Canada; see below.

Follow-up comment by PK

[. . . . ] So it is with these Australian pastors. They are to be censored and threatened based not on the veracity of their message, but on a peripheral, incidental statute called The Racial and Religious Tolerance Act. Truth, fact, reason, reality - even freedom of speech rights - all quite irrelevant in the face of that law. This blind religious belief in, and submission to, rigid statutes has got to be the expression of a very dull-witted and unimaginative society. Very dangerous ground.......

Keep Shariah law out of Ontario Salim Mansur, Jun. 25, 05, London Free Press

The premise of Shariah as sacred is contrary to principles of the Canadian legal system and would be at odds with the Canadian Constitution.

Moreover, there is no uniformity in Muslim understanding about the contents of Shariah, its interpretations and applications.

[. . . . ] The proponents of Shariah are, in my view, deceitfully engaged in importing the system piecemeal over time, by manipulating the politics of multiculturalism to their advantage. [. . . . ]

Book Review: 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America Captain Ed, July 05, 2005 -- Trackback

Goldberg goes after the pillars of liberalism, not just in its spokespeople, but in its central tenets. He attacks non-judgmentalism, not surprising for a book of this nature, but points out the intellectual stupidity of taking the concept to its extremes. Instead of promoting tolerance of the "right things", we have promoted what Goldberg calls "indiscriminate tolerance" -- where we not only have to tolerate the offensive . . . .

The above mentions both Goldberg's books: "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America : (and Al Franken Is #37)" -- and "Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort" Amazon

Think of 'indiscriminate tolerance' the next time you see a politician pushed to join a gay pride parade, a mayor who must declare his support or be booed out of office. . . Remember the photo of Joe Clark with the prancing, naked men in the background (if I recall this correctly)? The case of the Australian pastors who must not speak truth -- reading what is written in the Koran itself?

Muslim nations face rising threat of AIDS P. Parameswaran, AFP, July 4, 05

AIDS threatens to overwhelm many predominantly Muslim countries, whose leaders remain in a state of denial of crisis, doing little to stem the deadly problem. [. . . . ]

The report said that even though the Muslim world was riven by premarital sex, adultery, prostitution, homosexuality and intravenous-drug use -- which help spread the HIV virus that causes AIDS -- many governments have been slow to respond to the rapidly spreading disease. [. . . . ]

Hypocrisy kills.

Denial kills too;
think of the many African nations which attribute AIDS to Western genocide, et cetera -- anything but the truth about AIDS. What causes AIDS is known so don't try to make us feel guilty about not ponying up $$$ for the medications to help people whose own governments are allowed to join that font of all "ethical" stances, the UN, while attributing to the West all manner of bad faith.

When our governments are willing to take a stand that will actually help the AIDS sufferers--and their innocently infected wives or husbands--who may have been left in ignorance by their own governments, then come asking for money. Until then, forget about it. It is like most aid money -- throwing good money after bad. It does allow the government supported professional do-gooders to fly about, attend meetings of like agencies and preach to the rest of us; no wonder governments don't take steps which might actually work.

It is the case for most aid projects instigated by government officials and funded by other people's money. See Linda Leatherdale in the Toronto Sun / CNEWS July 3, 05 for an article on the over-taxation--gas, booze, etc--of Canadians, a roundup of items Tax me, I'm Canadian -- Common Cents . The taxes allow PM and claque to bluster and bluff about how they're doing this, that and something else . . . . all for yours or someone else's good. Remember the example of Ken Dryden, newly-crowned Daycare expert? He now thinks parents could be trained to be good enough to care for their own children. Give the government an inch . . .

Free! Bah! Humbug, you fools who fall for it! Every time you entrust government with any service, even charity, you have just lost another chunk of your freedom to choose . . . even what charities you want to support because you see them as having some chance of success. Why, they might even be associated with a Christian religious group! That would never do in secular Canada.

Importing Terror Nonie Darwish, FrontPageMag.com, July 5, 05

There was yet another bust in Lodi, California, of two Muslim religious leaders, father and son Hamid and Umer Hayat. They are alleged to be part of an al-Qaida terrorist cell. Such radical clerics come to the US through ‘religious visas’ that are much easier to obtain than regular visas. This is another story that does not look good for Muslim Americans. [. . . . ]

A prominent, well respected American Islamic studies teacher advised me that he stopped going to mosques in the US because "they are breeding grounds for hate and intolerance."
