Nov. 11, 2006: GENERATIONS OF VALOR

We truly take a lot for granted. Forget the football "heroes" and movie "stars". Pass this on so that all may know the price of freedom.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you,
Jesus Christ and the American/ Canadian Soldier.

One died for your soul;
the other for your freedom.

Thanks, W, for the message and the photo. I am happy to pass it on.

A small, but deeply humble meditation on war

As a young boy I remember hearing on the radio actual Canadian Saber pilots' reports of dogfights in Korea. "Incoming, nine o'clock. Get him!" It all sounded so thrilling to this boy who played his own war games. My friends and I would dress up in army surplus gear, including gas masks, and battle it out with BB guns. Unlike our cowboy games, in the real thing, when you got "shot" it was beyond dispute. The yelp or the cracked glass of the gas mask was manifest proof of that. To augment my warrior spirit, my next door neighbour--a naval veteran--allowed me to watch "Victory at Sea" on his snowy TV. If memory is correct, it came on during Sunday afternoons. He had an on-going voice-over to scenes of ships sinking and depth charges walloping the U-boats. "Ya, that's what it was like", he would intone, when a torpedo was shown barely missing a vessel. I never skipped a single episode. It came to define Sundays for me.

Years later, when I was in my mid-teens, I talked to a relative, George, about his WW11 experiences. His role in the Italian campaign was to go into formerly held German towns and de-mine the place. The favourite ploy of the retreating Germans was to place a pressure mine behind a picture of Hitler. Thus, when some soldier in a fury smashed it with the butt of his rifle, his days of military toil were over. George's best buddy on the demolition squad made one mistake. It followed that old adage, "If it seems to good to be true, then it probably is." The man decided to ride back to the lines in true style, so jumped into a German jeep and turned the key. The cloying fear of death at any moment was conveyed by George's harrowing accounts, but it was what he refused to say that changed my attitude towards that glorious adventure, war. He was seconded to the British 8th Army in Germany and therefore was at the liberation of the Nazi death camp, Bergen Belsen. Just when he got to the part about the mounds of naked corpses left uncovered by a panicked SS, he stopped the narrative. I prodded him to continue; however, all he would say was, "You really don't want to think about what I saw."

Years into adulthood, I saw what George was unable to describe. It was a visage that haunts the minds of all civilized people ... death on an industrial scale, with the entire German nation complicit in one way or another ... and these were the people who brought us Kant, Beethoven, and Goethe. If they were capable of this, what of us? Since that conversation with George, I have come to see all wars as insufferable stupidity; yet, I still realize that some wars are necessary to protect democracy and human dignity. I put the suppression of the barbaric Taliban in that category. They have proven their evil intent beyond any question. When over 500 Canadian soldiers died in the (mainly forgotten) Korean War, we preserved democracy for South Korea. We have only to look at today's Orwellian state of North Korea to see what fate would have visited them had we lost.

As a side note: This may be apropos of nothing, but I saw it as an epiphany, my moment of enlightenment. Back in my BB gun days, I was a crack shot. Chipmunks and squirrels were my victims. One day in the woods I spotted a huge black squirrel. I hit him and he survived. Infuriated, I peppered him with shot. He still survived. By then, I was feeling guilty at not haven't given him a "clean" death. I emptied my BB gun into his branch redoubt. Finally, he fell to the ground. He was beautiful even in death. I was mortified. How could I have killed this magnificent animal? I never hunted any living creature again. I have never seen a black squirrel since that carnage. Maybe even then I was onto something bigger than my old war lust. I believe that was the turning point for my glorification of it. George simply confirmed what I should have known.

Update Nov. 11, 06: A friend has said he now is able to find some of my posts using a search with Google. I shall post for a bit and see what happens. However, what I wrote below is what has been happening periodically ... especially after I post sensitive information or touch upon a sensitive topic. I leave it to readers to figure out which those would be.

One thing I did not mention is that, occasionally, my computer is shut down for no discernible reason, especially when I am working on files with that same sensitive information. Wherever and despite firewalls, routers, whatever, it seems that certain topics, words, information may trigger action and they or portions ... just disappear. Once you know that ... just follow the yellow-red-green brick road ... the path to knowledge and enlightenment.

To the black arts lads and / or lassies, remember, that is the kind of activity which develops my own ornerny persistence ... and renewed effort. FHTR

Don't count on the body counts

Take your pick: Either 400,000 died during the firebombing of Dresden, or the actual number was only 48,000. Or take Winston Churchill's dictum: "Truth in war is so precious that it must be surrounded by a bodyguard of lies". Vietnam was probably the death knell of the body count stat. As one old American friend, who was a cobra helicopter pilot in 'Nam told me, "Well, we were hustled out of our grass hallucinations to mount an offensive against some Vietnamese hamlet. Supposedly, there were Cong guys there. So we sprayed the place with 50,000 bullets, till there was not a hut or blade of grass standing. Whoever was down there, Charlie, children, women, goats, all were now very dead. You didn't even want to think about it." But they all probably became part of the body count.

Canada's General Fraser has tried to distance himself from these statistics. Going back to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, it was part of the psychological warfare by the Mujahadeen to take away their dead. Then we hear that many of the "Taliban" are the sons of disgruntled opium growers, who loan their sons to the Taliban for protection from drug eradication forces. So even the "Taliban" body count is suspect. On paper, the U.S. was winning the Vietnamese war. In fact, ironically, the infamous Tet Offensive by the Cong was a horrendous defeat for the Viet Cong; however the American public was so shocked by the audacity of the attack that they freaked and saw it as a defeat.

As for our present Canadian mainstream media's obsession with our own body count in Afghanistan, thank God, they weren't around when Canadians fought a similar monstrous foe on the beaches of Normandy. Mark Steyn has called this ghoulish obsession "a Dianaesque orgy of grief". Canadians have to get a grip on Islamofascism and its grand plans for them.

Frosted gym windows ... for the sake of the children

It has been reported that the YMCA on Montreal's Park Avenue has acceded to the Hasidic Jews' demand that the Y hide their gym from the lustful gazes of their young people, men. It appears that kids from the Hasidic school next door are actually seeing leotard-clad women exercising. The elders of this puritanical sect think this is tantamount to their witnessing hard-core porn. They even send these kids to remote summer camps to keep them from being polluted by the louche outfits of the Montrealers.

This capitulation to the fashion dictates of a tiny minority has ruffled the feathers of others. Since when did we allow such retrograde groups to decide our daily lives? What's next, that the Muslim community demand the women wear burqas while exercising? Last year's beach riots in Sydney, Australia, were over Muslim youths harassing the Aussie girls in their skimpy bathing suits. The local lads were not about to have immigrants tell them what their wives and girlfriends could wear. Canadians must hold the line about what influence anti-female or minority groups may have here. Enough of tolerance for the intolerant.

When Li Ka-shing sold $1.2-billion worth of stock in Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce last year, he made headlines by announcing plans to set up a Canadian charitable foundation.

At the time, the Hong Kong-based billionaire didn't say how much money he would put into the Canadian charity, called the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation, or what causes it would support.....heralded as a major gift to Canada and Mr. Li said it reflected the “warm welcome Canada has extended to me and our group of companies over the years.”

The foundation recently filed its first financial report with the Canada Revenue Agency, or CRA, and it shows that nearly all of the charity's gifts in 2005 went outside Canada.

According to the [first financial] report, the foundation had $256.9-million in assets as of Dec. 31, 2005, making it one of the 10 largest in the country. It gave away $53.4-million, of which $47.3-million went to the University of Hong Kong and $4.9-million was donated to the University of California at Berkeley. The only Canadian institution to receive money was St. Michael's Hospital Foundation in Toronto, which got $1.2-million.

[....] The Aga Khan and U.S. billionaire George Soros have set up several foundations to give money way on a global basis and ....

In general, Canadian tax laws make it difficult for foundations in this country to donate money abroad. But charity experts say pressure for change could come soon as more foreign-born Canadians start establishing private foundations with a desire to make international gifts. [....]

One of the comments I often read or hear when people are discussing the Islamic terrorism is that after all, didn't the West start it all with the Crusades? Here is a strong argument that no, the West didn't start it all with the Crusades

Mark Steyn was a winner of the 2006 Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism. Excerpted with permission from "America Alone: The End of the World as We KnowIt" (Regnery).

October 17, 2006 -- New Hampshire-based columnist Mark Steyn is one of the most trenchant writers in the English-speaking world today. Hitting stores this week is his new book, "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It" - a grim look at the West's fecklessness in the face of the threat from radical Islam. The Post is happy to give its readers a taste with this excerpt. [Read it online: New York Post link above]

[....] So an insurgency that lurks within a religion automatically has a global network. And you don't need "deep cover": You can hang your shingle on Main Street and we won't even notice it. And when we do - as we did on 9/11 - we still won't do anything about it, because, well, it's a religion, and modern man is disinclined to go after any faith except perhaps his own.

But Islam is not just a religion. Those lefties who bemoan what America is doing to provoke "the Muslim world" would go bananas if any Western politician started referring to "the Christian world." When such sensitive guardians of the separation of church and state endorse the first formulation but not the second, they implicitly accept that Islam has a political sovereignty too. Thus, it's not merely that there's a global jihad lurking within this religion, but that the religion itself is a political project - and, in fact, an imperial project - in a way that modern Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism are not. [....] The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.

The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.

All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.

“Some Middle East states, including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Saudi Arabia, have shown initial interest [in using] nuclear power primarily for desalination purposes,” Tomihiro Taniguch, the deputy director-general of the IAEA, told the business weekly Middle East Economic Digest. He said that they had held preliminary discussions with the governments and that the IAEA’s technical advisory programme would be offered to them to help with studies into creating power plants. March 5, 2004 update: In an undated statement, the far-left Tides Foundation announces that is is funding CAIR's "Interfaith Coalition Against Hate Crimes" project with the ostensible aim to promote peaceful co-existence between Muslims and non-Muslims and decrease tolerance for anti-Muslim hate crimes.

[....] May 12, 2006 update: Mohamed Elmasry of the Canadian Islamic Congress addressed the Marxism-2006 conference in Toronto and told the assembled leftists:

Now, for the first time in history, the political left is working with conservative Muslims
on issues of social justice, with the long-term goal of building a world that lives by peace, through justice. Communists, Marxists, socialists, and nationalists are working with civil libertarians, liberals, and conservatives to achieve this urgent goal together. [I would dispute libertarians and conservatives.]

Pakistani authorities have been warned in an internal memo prepared by engineers of the CHASNUPP nuclear power plant, built with Chinese assistance in central Pakistan that many more of its 250 nuclear scientists and engineers were planning to make a run to other countries.

Human smuggling - Prostitution, Abuse of Women

Jail for gang who smuggled in sex slaves for brothels , Michael Horsnell, Nov. 4, 06

www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-2436798,00.html

A RUTHLESS gang of Malaysian and Vietnamese traffickers who lured hundreds of women to Britain to work as sex slaves in a £2 million-a-year vice racket were jailed yesterday.

[....] The man behind the operation, Thanh Hue Thi, 44, a cook from Golders Green, northwest London, recruited women aged 18 to 24 and smuggled them in, posing as tourists, to work in brothels in Bayswater, West London, and Edgbaston, Birmingham. He admitted trafficking women for prostitution and was jailed for five years.

[....] The judge said that urgent inquiries should be made into the brothel boss’s status in this country, and that, if he were here illegally, he should be deported upon release. Also in the dock was Kenny Low, 50, a chef, of Mayfair, Central London. He, too, admitted trafficking conspiracy and controlling prostitution and was jailed for 3½ years.

Leng Loh, 25, from Hay Park, Birmingham, Choon Fong Loh, 64, of Mayfair, and Kwok Leong Hoh, 25, of Berkhampsted, Hertfordshire, were all jailed for 15 months for controlling prostitution. Godfrey Wong, 21, of Rowley Regis, West Midlands, was jailed for 12 months. [....]

The 4:34 Dance and Spousal Abuse: "Beat them lightly... It's in the Koran.", Friday, October 27, 2006 at 1:05pm. From last Sunday's Washington Post

econoclectic.powerblogs.com/posts/1161702796.shtml

[....] Verse 4:34 retains a strong following, even among many who say that women must be treated as equals under Islam. Indeed, Muslim scholars and leaders have long been doing what I call "the 4:34 dance" — they reject outright violence against women but accept a level of aggression that fits contemporary definitions of domestic violence.

Western leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, have recently focused on Muslim women's veils as an obstacle to integration in the West. But to me, it is 4:34 that poses the much deeper challenge of integration. How the Muslim world interprets this passage will reveal whether Islam can be compatible with life in the 21st century.
