Feb. 26, 2007: What happened with this?

Sometimes, strange things happen with posting, so, while this is late, it is still relevant.

Witnesses changed their story at sponsorship inquiry -- "The report goes back to October 2005 and found discrepancies, inconsistencies or contradictions in the testimony of about half a dozen witnesses." , Kathryn May, CanWest / Ottawa Citizen, February 08, 2007

OTTAWA - MPs went behind closed doors Wednesday night to decide whether to pursue perjury charges against half a dozen politicians and bureaucrats who said one thing at the Gomery inquiry and another when they testified before the Commons public accounts committee.

[....] Lawyer Gregory Tardi explained the committee could also take "simpler and easier" steps of making its report public and ask witnesses to explain the differences or "move on to other businesses."

What happened? Sometimes, information is just not readily available.

MONTREAL - The full depth of the sponsorship scandal has yet to be revealed, and new charges in connection with the affair that indirectly brought down the federal Liberal government could be forthcoming, a new book says. [....]

The book also says that Jacques Corriveau, the former chief fundraiser for the federal Liberals in Quebec and a close friend of the Chretien family, hinted to staffers of two former federal Cabinet ministers, Martin Cauchon and Don Boudria, that he had worked out a scheme to enrich the party from the sponsorship program.

"He told me that the program had helped the party," Boudria aide Daniel Pilon is quoted as saying. "He didn't talk about cash in envelopes, but he talked about a system."

Mr. Corriveau, who received millions in consulting fees from firms with sponsorship contracts, denied at the Gomery hearings that he engineered the kickbacks to the party, though a former director-general of the Quebec wing, Daniel Dezainde, testified that Mr. Corriveau had confessed the scheme to him at one point.
