The world has finally awakened to the serpents in the garden

Friday's takedown of all four bombers, and one who abandoned his mission. was spectacular. The rapid response of Italian and Zambian police shows a cooperation much needed. And this final Islamic outrage galvanized many countries to really get tough on extremism. France is starting a wide-spread deportation of the Wahhabi imams and the other foreign radicals. Even naturalized Frenchmen won't be exempted. Like those of most Western countries, the French have allowed this radicalism to gain a foothold on their soil. When the Parisian police have to make a raid on the North African suburbs, they have to go in like a platoon because the Arab residents bombard them with garbage from the rooftops or try to burn their cars. One cop called it "The Jungle". And, mind you, this is just to protect their gangsters. What would they do if the cops were hunting down their brothers or cousins for a terrorist attack? Or their burqa clad bombers?

Perhaps the most welcome development this week was General Musharraf's crackdown on the vast number of virulently anti-western (a.k.a anti-modernity) madrassas. He is deporting all the thousands of foreign religious students and ending visas for future students. Radical clerics are being rounded up. 600 extremists have been detained in the last week alone. Musharraf knows that Pakistan could easily be the next Afganistan if the fundamentalists win power. The Taliban with nuclear bombs. This is very courageous, as the religious nuts have tried to assassinate him twice and his military intelligence branch is heavily infiltrated by Islamic extremists. There is still a reasonably large, educated, middle class, who could create something out of the country. However, Musharraf seems to have made a deal with the shadow opposition, made up of the clerics and the fundamentalist politicos. Therefore it will only be a partial crackdown. Still, a gutsy guy to do what he can. I'm sure the extremists are plotting their next assassination attempt.

In the once-so-tolerant countries of the Netherlands and Denmark there is a backlash and now Muslim immigrants are seen as a time bomb. They didn't assimilate, or even want to. Their presence was a rebuke to everything these Europeans held dear--gender equality, modern laws, and a separation of church and state. A hugely alien philosophy was embraced by this Muslim community. Not only did they not embrace the open society of the Dutch and Danish, they despised it for its perceived decadence. Intermarriage was practically unheard of in the Islamic areas. This dissonance between the two cultures was bearable until the murderous intent among some Muslims became known. Studies and polls began to show that these immigrants were and are frequently supportive of Islamic terrorist attacks. Most didn't think they should assimilate to European culture; rather it is Europeans who should accept Sharia law as the only law. These polls became shock therapy for the host countries.

This scenario is being played out all over Europe. It is manifested along the famous Vienna Danube riverfront. In 36 C heat, there are the Muslims away up the bank, far from the restaurants, cafes, and the very infidels themselves. The Young Viennese clad in halters, shorts--and yes, even thong bathing suits. In the middle of the river is Donau Insul, the artificially-created island, where nude bathing is permitted. But far away from all this are the Muslims, their women swaddled in thick black outfits, sitting separate from their menfolk. A friend said, "And many of these are the second generation." How to stem this growing resentment of western ideas is the challenge. In countries like Denmark the demographics are horrifying. If the native Danes don't increase their birthrate, they will soon see a Muslim majority, with all that this would entail. There are now billboards showing a young blond Danish girl and underneath is the message, "In thirty years she will be a minority."

The future implications of a"Eurabia" replacing the cultures of Austria, Italy, and other European states is unbearable to think about. While we are pondering our response, the numbers of disaffected Muslim kids grows. In the You/Gov poll taken in England of Muslim attitudes towards the London bombings, the feared truth emerged. 1% of those polled said they fully supported violence to change Britain. 12% couldn't condemn the bombers. 63% thought Britain was corrupt and decadent and should be brought down. The multiculturalist's worst nightmare has been revealed--the ultimate canker in the rose.

It is time to have a serious study of future immigration patterns. That shibboleth that "all cultures are of equal value" has to rethought. In Canada, less than half of the imams signed that declaration that stated terrorism was wrong. Unlike the British and American Islamic clerics, they didn't go as far as to pronounce a fatwa against it. This arouses more suspicion than it calms. Does the You/Gov poll hold true here in Canada? The Liberals should commission a similar poll--and publish it, no matter what it concludes. It is our right to know what we are facing, and if it is gruesome, then new immigration quotas will have to be created. Has our dithering PM and his immigrant-addicted party got the nerve to really lead? Think of that during election time.

Oh, rose, though art sick . . .

Bud, surely you realize by now that the only imperative for Paul Martin and his government is to be re-elected. Weakness unto death.
