MONTREAL - A man who in 1990 stabbed his mother 40 times before slashing her throat has won a long battle to practise law in Quebec.
Since serving a prison sentence for manslaughter and completing law school, Sebastien Brousseau, 37, has repeatedly been refused admission by the province's law society, the Barreau du Quebec. [....]
Five times Mr. Brousseau applied, and five times he was refused, but the latest refusal has been overturned by Quebec's Tribunal des Professions, a judicial body that hears appeals of decisions by professional orders. [....]
After being granted parole, he earned a law degree from Universite de Montreal, graduating in 1996. He volunteered with a group defending prisoners' rights and co-authored a legal text on the rights of detainees. [....]
