The Galah House, The Poll -&- Spin and the Public Interest

Note: Hansard: QP Nov. 16, 05 -- excerpts shamelessly ripped by NJC from the website of the one who did the work getting so much from Hansard -- Thanks Newsbeat1. My excuse? I am pressed for time and these stood out as needing to be circulated.

My comments are in []

[To whom is MacKay referring? ]

Mr. Peter MacKay (Central Nova, CPC): . . . Mr. Speaker, that is another non-answer from one of the turncoat, twin towers of virtue on the Prime Minister's ad scam defence team. [. . . ]

Mr. Gilles Duceppe (Laurier—Sainte-Marie, BQ): . . . . $8,000 debt accumulated by the candidate in the riding of Louis-Hébert [. . . ]

Marc-Yvan Côté was expelled from the Liberal Party of Canada for having given tainted money to 18 ridings in eastern Quebec, and in these 10 or so candidates received money personally.

[Read the exchange with Hon. Jean Lapierre (Minister of Transport, Lib.)]

Keeseekoose First Nation

[Hon. Andy Scott's attempt to misinterpret the thrust of a question -- misunderstanding that it is Scott's stewardship in question, not the Opposition impugning any one group -- but then, MP Scott Brison has the same problem -- misunderstanding some questions (many?) and not answering the question asked. In fact, I hear air filler, but not answers, whenever I listen.]

MP Jim Prentice -- Would the government consider establishing a sort of Liberal offender registry, a criminal registry that the public could consult from time to time and which the minister could use?

[Scott was apoplectic, IMHO, when I was listening.]

Hon. Andy Scott: Mr. Speaker, Canadians know a smear campaign when they see it. [. . . . Scroll down for "Spin" Mr. Scott. Is this how the media are supposed to play your remark? ]

Mr. Garry Breitkreuz (Yorkton—Melville, CPC): . . . . I ask members to listen to this list of money taken from the Keeseekoose school account: $1,200 for Sea World, $158 for Zorro Jewelry of Santa Monica, $125 for Universal Studios. In total, this is over $3,000 stolen from the children on the reserve to pay for a California vacation.

Why will the minister not stand up for the schoolchildren of the Keeseekoose reserve? [. . . . ]

Mr. Tom Lukiwski (Regina—Lumsden—Lake Centre, CPC): . . . . the Liberals knew about this theft before they nominated the candidate who is at the heart of this controversy.

Hon. Tony Valeri (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, Lib.): . . . . Two-thirds of Canadians said they wanted to wait for Justice Gomery's second report. [. . . . ]

NJC Insert

[MP Valeri hasn't read this: Ipsos-Reid poll for the National Post, CanWest News Service and Global National.]

78% OK with holiday vote Mark Kennedy, Nov. 17, 05

OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin faces considerable risks with an election strategy that entails blaming opposition parties for an unpopular Christmas campaign and luring voters with billions of dollars in tax cuts, a new poll has found. [. . . . ]

End of Insert

Mr. Brian Pallister (Portage—Lisgar, CPC): . . . . Let us take André Ouellet, please. The Liberal porkmaster general felt entitled to pay himself $2 million in lavish expenses. The public was angry. The Prime Minister promised an audit and 14 months later we are still waiting.

What happened to accountability? What happened to cleaning things up? André Ouellet is the poster boy for Liberal entitlement and this is a cover-up. [. . . . ]

This country needs relief from the Liberalsand more of their "programs." by Leo Knight

Reader comment

[. . . . ] Canadians as a whole are to blame for their country's demise. Trudeau, Chretien and Martin did not force their way into power. If Canadians are so addicted to federal handouts and a so-called social safety net (ie. safety hammock)that they are willing to cast their votes for Liberals, then we can expect to see more of the same. More Adscams, more government waste, higher taxes and more carnage on our streets. [. . . . ]
