Firearms & Gun Registry, Crystal Meth -&- Institutionalized Day Care System: Poll

Real Solutions for a Real Problem -- "The use of firearms in Canada’s cities is on a dangerous upward trend." 8/16/2005

The use of firearms in Canada’s cities is on a dangerous upward trend. Despite statistics that claim that violent crime in cities has decreased over the past decade, gang violence in particular seems to be on the rise, and innocent people have become ensnared in the crossfire. In Toronto for example, over 2000 firearms have been confiscated since January, there have been 28 gun-related fatalities this year, and 37 people have been shot since the end of June.

While Canadians are almost universally in favour of cost-effective gun control programs, the 2-billion in taxpayer dollars that have been poured into the mismanaged Liberal gun registry is a shameful misuse of money, and has not kept guns out of the hands of criminals.

Even Statistics Canada has stated that the impact of the Liberal firearms registry cannot be measured, particularly since there have been gun-control laws for most of the last century. In fact, after the implementation of the 1995 regulations in C-68, firearm-related deaths continued to decline at the same rate that began in 1991.

Adding to the fact that our RCMP continue to suffer from funding cutbacks and staffing shortages, particularly along our borders, every year thousands of guns are smuggled across our border from the United States. The Liberal government’s slack approach to border security has done nothing to fix this, and our border guards continue to be woefully understaffed and under-equipped.

Liberal solutions to gun violence have simply not been effective.

A Conservative government will address gun related crime in our cities by repealing the long gun registry and will allocate the $2 billion to increase the number of police officers on our streets. We will increase the security presence on our borders, locking down open entry points for smugglers. And we will introduce measures to provide mandatory minimum sentences for the criminal use of firearms; strict monitoring of high-risk individuals.

The Conservative Party believes in real solutions to prevent crime in our cities, not phony liberal justice.

Do you believe that the federal Liberals spending $5 billion over 5 years for an institutionalized day care system is the best way to allow parents to care for and educate their children?
