UN, Katrina Rescue & Blame, Wynton Marsalis: Not Racism, Katrina Updates, Canadian Readiness for Disaster
Sense of crisis grows at UN Edith Lederer, Sept. 5, 05
[. . . . ] Secretary General Kofi Annan wants the leaders to take action to tackle poverty, reform the UN and address global security. But the 191 member states are deeply divided on what the summit should accomplish, and negotiators have not agreed on a single key issue. [. . . . ]
Seven issues are snagging talks: poverty and development, terrorism, collective action to prevent genocide, disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation, a new Human Rights Council to replace the discredited Human Rights Commission, a new Peacebuilding Commission to help countries emerging from conflict; and the overhaul of UN management. [. . . . ]
Katrina Response & Blame
Why does someone always have to be blamed for problems?
Sometimes, life just is the pits and bad things happen. People try to help and still, things go wrong.
Last night on TV, Wynton Marsalis of New Orleans and the Lincoln Centre, says he doesn't think this true -- that there were white areas police and rescuers did not get to quickly. 'Racist legacy' intact, critics say He is a black jazz trumpeter who heads the Lincoln Centre Jazz musicians -- or something like that; he's not stupid, comes from the area, has some idea of what he is talking about.
As an example of the problems, did you watch how long it takes to get one or two people safely fastened in/onto whatever they were being lifted to helicopters with? Rescuers can do a job only so fast; the whole situation is horrendous and a vast disaster.
It would not serve the "race industry" to let this opportunity slip by, of course. D*** them! Why don't they keep quiet, stop trying to lay blame and, instead, go in and help?

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that Her Excellency the Governor General has approved his recommendation that the Honourable André Wery be appointed Associate Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Québec.

Prior to his initial appointment to the bench, he was a partner with the firm Desjardins, Ducharme, Stein and Monast.
I read somewhere that the Liberal fortunes in Quebec are rising. I wonder why.
China won't agree to target for cutting greenhouse emissions, says Dion -- "not even in the post-2012 phase of the Kyoto climate pact." Dennis Bueckert, Sept. 3, 05
About 20 per cent of the mercury from human sources that is polluting Canadian lakes and rivers comes from Chinese coal burning, he said. Mercury is highly toxic and can affect the intellectual development of children.
He says Canada can help reduce the toxic fallout.
"The best technology in the world, at this moment, is at Calgary. If we can help China to burn coal cleanly we will aid the Chinese, we will aid Canada, and we will aid the planet, and we will make megatonnes of money. [Who is the WE?]
However, continued growth in Chinese emissions could easily offset the emissions-cutting efforts being made by other countries, including Canada's $10 billion Kyoto implementation plan. v

Friends? For a Taxpayer-Funded Broadcaster?
Satellite Radio: Do you believe this poll from Ipsos Reid which conveniently states what Friends of Canadian Broadcasting and the Heritage Minister from Quebec want? . . . especially when you read at bottom, SOURCE: FRIENDS OF CANADIAN BROADCASTING

- Why wasn't the National Guard called out sooner to maintain order? Responsibility with each state's National Guard contingent in situations like this (where they operate within state boundaries) is the responsibility of each state's governor. To put it bluntly, the responsibility for calling out the NG in LA rested with the governor. If it didn't happen on time, that's HER failing.
