Expected to make more waves than any other testimony

Forensic accountants follow the money at Gomery Commission

[. . . . ] Internationally renowned forensic accounting firm Kroll Lindquist Avey is expected to shake the foundations of Justice John Gomery's inquiry today with a detailed report on whether pockets were lined in the sponsorship scandal.

The Kroll report is expected to follow the money trail from federal coffers to the Liberal friendly ad firms and possibly into the wallets of Grit organizers.

The findings are expected to make more waves than any other testimony before Gomery." [. . . . ]

The real value of Gomery

"Gomery noted that Liberal government officials had exaggerated and distorted the costs of his inquiry by falsely suggesting its budget could reach $72 million, an erroneous figure that was then widely reported by the media.

Gomery said these officials had lumped in "God knows what expenses that were out of the control of the inquiry" to arrive at the $72 million. In fact, he said, the commission was $1.4 million under budget for 2004 and on target to meet its overall budget, set by the Liberal government itself, of $32 million.

While Gomery didn't say it, everyone knows some Liberals -- and Liberal-friendly media -- used these distorted figures to bash the commission and argue it would prove to be more trouble than it was worth. (Many also foolishly predicted, prior to Jean Brault's testimony, that no "smoking gun" would be found.)" [. . . . ]
