Frum: Gomery, Justice & RCMP, Brison, Bogeman & Ezra Levant

Dirty Pool -- Don't miss Frum

The questions Gomery didn't answer -- "Under Ottawa's 'new rules', we can access information that impugns Chretien, but not Martin" David Frum, The National Post, A14, Nov. 8, 05

Is there election dirty money which may be financing the Liberals' next Paul Martin campaign -- "an interest free campaign loan"?

"Look at the way the Gomery Inquiry was set up" -- how the RCMP can check into Jean Chretien but not into Paul Martin. Now why would that be?

If Canadians want clean government they will have to elect a new Minister of Justice and a new Solicitor-General who will tell the RCMP to follow the trail wherever it leads -- with no special protection, no doors locked, no company or organization marked off as beyond the jurisdiction of the police.

Frum's conclusion, if this doesn't happen, is a perspective I hadn't considered.

Editorial: Demonizing Stephen Harper -- It was not a good idea, Scott Brison. NP, Nov. 8, 05

Bringing out the Quebec separatist bogeyman, again.

Bloc 'tidal wave' will sweep Quebec - expelled Grit Nov. 8, 05

I've been impressed with Gilles Duceppe, from what I've seen on television which is too little for an assessment, but he is prepared and relentless questioning PM and team in the House of Commons. Maybe Quebeckers want government cleaned up / cleaned out? Unfortunately, the schools, universities, public institutions and Quebec intellectuals for more than a generation have imbued Quebec students with separatist longings and the promise of a better life free of Canada but the reality may come to them soon -- money, passports, and more will need to change.

Has it ever occurred to people that Quebec may choose to stay in Canada once the realities are honestly spelled out? If they don't, that is supposed to be negative for the Maritimes so Canadians are supposed to be afraid not to have the Liberals in power. Hogwash. Quebeckers will use their common sense, maybe even discover some new reasons to remain in Canada, but this bogeyman has been used to gain votes by the Liberals for too long. The big difference Canadians hope for the future is that TROC won't be paying blackmail via the Liberals for Quebeckers to stay in Canada . . . with the concomitant $$$ sticking to the friendly Liberal delivery boys.

If the asymmetrical deals don't end, if the blackmail to advantage some Canadians to the disadvantage of other Canadians continues with its unfair results, if the sluicing of taxpayer $$$ to the usual suspects in the usual direction doesn't stop, then there will be more than one fire to put out in this burning building called Canada.

Canadians have had enough. Just read Ezra and go to the Western Standard and the Shotgun to read what the MSM don't report . . . don't want known.

Business

EnCana set to spend $12.5B on oilsands projects FP, Nov. 8, 05

"Developers go big and bold on oilsands -- Ambitious strategies have some in the industry nervous about the market's expectations" -- Election year -- big announcements -- big pipelines and refineries? Claudia Cattaneo, FP, Nov. 8, 05

"Xstrata may bid for Falconbridge" -- based in Switzerland, run from London -- tax advantage Drew Hasselback, FP, Nov. 8, 05

Some analysts have said Switzerland's tax system frees up enough cash for Xstrata to pay a sizable premium for the 80% of Falconbridge it does not own. The question is whether this premium would be big enough both to trump Inco's offer and to cover the US$320-million break fee on Inco's friendly deal with Falconbridge.
