Winston Churchill’s comment on Islam

This came from a friend -- and thanks R.

Sir Winston Churchill’s comment on Islam
from The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248 50
(London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy.

The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.

A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.

The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property (either as a child, a wife, or a concubine) must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.

Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science (the science against which it had vainly struggled) the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome."

Remember, this was written 106 years ago. Not much has changed.

I wondered if you freind "R" is a certain rosemarie59 who was a frequent poster on CNEWS Forum.
She frequently referred to your blog.
CNEWS Forum was shut down, but the majority of posters who used to post there have setup another forum at http://s2.1-2-free-forums.com/ransomstoddard.html

All are welcome, and we miss rose!

Hi, uplink,

R is actually a guy I know who sends me items once in a while. I don't know rosemarie59 though I appreciate any press -- well, most of it. I'll check your new space as I used to find some useful articles posted by some forum posters -- not the people who were uncivilized about what others put up, but the others who were decent and civilized about posting (and some of the jokes).

It is too bad CNEWS closed down the forum because it led people to CNEWS and to the Toronto Sun, along with other news sites in their bailiwick. The forum generated interest by people who might not have looked further except for the forum. Readers became used to the names and personalities (including who to skip) so might look further after one of those people brought up a website or expressed different views. Readers found people whose recommendations would be of interest; maybe CNEWS will bring back the forum.
