During the struggle between the Church, secular intellectuals and politicians in France, a republican politician made the following the statement in 1870: "whoever controls women, controls everything. They begin with women, then move to children, and end with the men, in other words, the entire society."

[. . . . ] The real issue in the ongoing constitutional, intellectual and political battle in Iraq is: will we have an Islamic constitution and Shari'a law, i.e., a religious system, or will we have a secular democratic constitution that separates religion from the state? That system alone guarantees complete freedom for religion and the religious, and safeguards this freedom which is lacking in every Islamic system when it comes to other religions, as well as freedom of expression, thought, and belief. . . . Iraq [voted] to approve or reject a Constitution written by elected delegates, that would, if it prevails, make that country the first credible democracy in the history of the Arab peoples. It is, potentially, a great milestone.

[. . . . ] Across the Arab world, the result will be watched with mixed feelings. Iraq is predominantly Shia, and Arab. The rest of that world is predominantly Sunni.

[. . . . ] Both Islam as a religion and as a theocratic model are quite at odds with Judeo-Christian principles and democratic society. The points you have made such as the Muslim polarized view of the world, being Dar-el-Islam and Dar-el-Harb, are just a part of the difference.

One of the significant problems with Islam as concerns the West is that Islam religiously mandates a manifest destiny to dominate the world. [. . . . ]
