Correction of Misinformation

I received this while I was ill so I did not get it posted then. I am bumping it up from where it was because it is important not to allow misinformation to thrive. The real information we have is bad enough. I had checked in three places when I posted the original but I did not see this later article from The Star.

Additionally, while our immigration and refugee system badly needs reform, I do not believe that misinformation is the answer. Please note this newer information. NJC

Comment and correction -- new information from a reader on how much of your tax money available to refugees from an anonymous reader on a post from the June 16, 2005 archive, below an article entitled "Speaking of Control & Hackers".

You may check that comment section or this source for the Star article: Can we dispel this urban myth? Toronto Star, Nov. 27, 2004, DON SELLAR -- via The Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA)is an umbrella organization of agencies, groups, and individuals that provide services to the South Asian Community.

MANDATE:
CASSA is an umbrella organization that supports and advocates on behalf of existing as well as emerging South Asian agencies, groups, and communities in order to address their diverse and dynamic needs. CASSA’s goal is to empower the South Asian Community. CASSA is committed to the elimination of all forms of discrimination from Canadian society.

If the amount really is so low, how did Somali warlord Aidid's wife and children live in a city as expensive as Toronto? How does any refugee live in Toronto on that amount? There must be some other source of income or access to other funds. How do those undesirables who are turfed from Canada--the few--manage to afford the plane fare to return, as we learn from the number of people we learn are in Canada after having been turfed? This is a problem for Canadians; we have little faith in our government and its refugee determination system, with its "appointed" gatekeepers; we read of the activities of some--not all--refugees and we learn more and more how corrupt our government is. It is a small step to not trusting when, for example, Paul Martin and his team are trolling for votes.

Example: MPs: New citizenship laws needed -- "no legal background is required to become a citizenship judge." By SUE BAILEY, Oct. 6, 05

OTTAWA (CP) - A Liberal MP is pushing his own government to overhaul citizenship laws in part to ensure that those who swear in new Canadians are competent.

Andrew Telegdi, head of the all-party Commons committee on citizenship and immigration, says a new Citizenship Act is overdue. He called Thursday for the immediate introduction of a bill that would set minimum standards for citizenship judges, who are appointed by Ottawa.

MPs would also have a chance to approve candidates for the posts, which critics say are too often given to friends of the government. [. . . . ]
