Hackers and Spying -- Red Bricks along the Yellow Brick Road

Update: Some of the links were incorrect; I have fixed them.

Note: There is much more included here than the title would suggest -- space constraints.

Hackers and Spying

I have mentioned hacks before. Well, how do you think I got these blocks of IP numbers? Thanks to all the computer nerds who have befriended me. May you prosper. I really think that, before any more business deals, hacking is one area that should be addressed.

Here is just a sample:

Of course, there must be a simple explanation; these would have nothing to do with the articles posted on this site . . . would they?

Note that, if you check, you will find Beijing in the list rather often. No attempt at control there . . . A little googling (Chunghwa) and guess what? Do you remember which Hong Kong Canadian billionaire owns Hutchison Whampoa?

HGC Collaborates with INET in Thailand and HiNet in Taiwan to Explore Opportunities In IP-Related Service Markets

Hutchison Global Communications ("HGC") announced today that it will collaborate with the Internet Thailand Public Company Limited (INET) and with HiNet in Taiwan to target market opportunities in IP-related services. This represents two significant milestones reflecting HGC's success in its international business in more than 10 overseas markets in the past 12 months.

Last month, HGC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with INET to identify opportunities. . . . INET, . . . high-speed Internet connectivity.

. . . HGC has clinched a peering agreement with HiNet. [. . . . ]

Scroll down today or check later for "China", "NTDTV" and "control" in the same article and you'll understand why this is more than ominous. . . . . Soon, the world.

Then I had occasion to learn about this group:

I became curious. Would that group have anything to do with . . . scroll down for this phrase:

What on earth for?

For those getting into bed with dragons, how much privacy, personal or otherwise, do you think you and your business will have? Perhaps a more pertinent question: How long do you think you'll have your business?

Of course, there might be a possible quid pro quo. . . . if someone is in a position to offer any . . . . or to know nothing about such arrangements. . . . which may amount to the same thing.

Bombardier, Tellier & Perqs

Tellier got $5.84M after leaving Bombardier Last updated May 3 2005 09:12 AM EDT, CBC

MONTREAL – Paul Tellier, Bombardier Inc.'s former chief executive, collected $5.84 million when he abruptly left the company in January, a company document shows.

Tellier, 65, got a lump sum payment of $3.84 million, equal to two years' salary, plus $2 million from an executive incentive bonus plan. He's also eligible for an annual pension of $360,000. [. . . . ]

This is the company to which Canadians' tax money has been bleeding for . . . When do the taxpayers who have paid for it get something in return . . . besides requests for more?

I thought of the criticisms the PM and entourage levelled at Jason Kenny's support for the deceased Chinese leader associated with a democratic movement in China--in that he visited those mourning, perhaps at the home of mourning--during the PM's trip to China.

Then, I considered what Paul Martin was really in China for . . . and this article seems worth re-reading. (It was not labelled as a business trip, but there was much Canada-China business activity blessed by his presence.)

Has anyone noticed that Canada seems to be more and more following France in its foreign policy? Did I read that Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew lives part of the year in Paris? No connection. Ah . . . !

China spying on us: CSIS Robert Fife, CanWest, Dec. 29, 05

China's intelligence services have systematically targeted Canada's science and technology sectors and use Chinese students and visiting scientists to steal technology for military use and to enhance the country's global economic competitiveness, a senior intelligence source says.

In its annual report to Parliament, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service warns foreign spies are seeking to acquire ''Canada's scientific and technological developments, critical economic and information infrastructure, military and other classified information, putting at risk Canada's national security.''

Is China’s ownership interest in Alberta oil sands being financed with Canadian tax dollars?

Officials with Sinopec Corp.
[which has gained some new deal in the oil sands, so it was reported in May ] -- a company majority owned by the Chinese government has already been in Alberta for their own look-see--an actual tour of the oil sands.

[. . . . ] When the fix is in, the Canadian Liberal Government will have managed to sell off our nation’s coveted natural resources–allowing China to buy them with our own money!

This story begins and ends with The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), which provides more development assistance to China than to any other country in the world. That information gem comes from the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.

CIDA’s disbursements for the bilateral program (the core of Canada’s development in China) amounted to $65.45 million in 2002.

Megamillion Canadian economic expenditures in China extend to projects conducted by Canadian non-profit and private sector groups, as well as by the International Development Research Centre. Canada also contributes big time to the work of multilateral agencies in China, such as the United Nations Development Program, UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

Overtaxed Canadian citizens ruled by a Liberal government that claims budget surplus, and still no tax breaks in sight, are paying plenty to Communist China. [. . . . ]

Forensic Accounting the Next "Big Thing"?

Rumours are going about that this field is becoming . . . well, I suppose the word that came to mind (s**y) is not normally associated with the field; nevertheless, with televised Gomery Inquiry appearances, the practitioners are gaining a kind of celebrity status, at least, in the field's passage from gray functional to something else.

With that in mind, then, there are other government contracts which the CCRA and its forensic accountants might go through, instead of detouring around; for example. These contracts have to do with Bombardier and a network of influence and power.

This is most engaging reading matter -- yes, from a forensic accountant. . .

LPO-CBC Suppressing or just Incompetent?

U.S. Government Agency Cites “China Pressure” in Stopping NTDTV Broadcast Posts Report About NTDTV-Eutelsat Satellite Agreement James Fish, The Epoch Times, Apr. 8, 05, via Prime Time Crime

I assume NTDTV refers to New Tang Dynasty Television. NJC

The United States’ Senate Congressional-Executive Committee on China has published a report on their website describing how the Chinese Communist government has systematically harassed and suppressed New York-based television station NTDTV, finally pressuring many companies to renege on contracts and agreements that allowed the station to broadcast overseas.

[. . . . ] Citing information from Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an internationally-respected media rights group, the report . . . .

On January 18, 2005, an RSF report said that the Chinese embassy in Ottawa had revoked visas issued to two Canadian journalists working for NTDTV who wished to cover Prime Minister Paul Martin's visit to China. [. . . . ]

http://www.canada.com/national/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=5f70a42a-e86f-4aef-9cda-589fda81647f

The important thing to remember is that it appears that the Chinese and Paul Martin did not want anyone to visit the home of the deceased leader, Mr. Zhao Ziyang:

the late communist party boss Zhao Ziyang, who was fired for opposing the Tiananmen Square massacre.
